Another option that you might not think of ... if you want a push button preset solution ... is a Boss GE-7 graphic equalizer in the loop. Has a boost and cut ... plus you can scoop the mids on clean for example. Works great ... low cost ... pretty flexible.

I have used one to scoop the mids and boost the volume slightly when using the cleans. The volume slider is really sensitive but once set ... it stays. Just another idea ... and it did not appear to negatively effect the tone for me.

Do you use it in the loop? That worked well for me. Go easy on the volume slider at first - only needs a little.

I hadn't thought of the GE-7 type approach.
Just to be clear - having settled into the OD sound of the amp, I prefer the 'clean' sound that I get by lowering the volume pot on my guitar - it's not pristine clean but has a nice edge to it. However when I do this, the overall amp Volume is too low - if I adjust master for my 'clean' sound it is too damn loud when I open up the volume pot on my guitar for the OD sound.

I'll definitely experiment with something in the loop to control this.

Thanks once again for everyone's input, much appreciated.

He is wanting to clean up the tone like his guitar volume does, so wouldn't you want the pedal right after the guitar into the input?
No. He is using the guitar volume to control the tone/gain. Since this changes the volume he wants to control the overall output with a pedal so he can better balance his clean and OD tones.

To accomplish this the pedal needs to be in the loop.
Oh sorry, my bad.

Hey exocet, have you tried dialing back the drive on the overdrive channel for just a hint of dirt, then you can set the volume for balance and use the footswitch when you want more, or engage the PAB.
With the amount of knobs on these amps, I'm sure you could get any effect you want.

Does this look like an older EB pedal to you? It doesn't look quite the same as their current ones?

Looking over some notes here I found the Earnie Ball V pedal I mentioned were made in the late 80's early 90's.. The pots used were Bournes not Bradley's and were sealed...If you go with EB those are the ones you want... Many players didn't care for the string driven Ball's as they liked a bit more resistance on them than what the string provided.. If you want something a bit stiffer feel the next one to look at is the Boss FV-100.. These are pretty cool in that they are not string driven have a tuner out which is cool and a volume control to adjust the amount of volume you have with the heel completely depressed..They do have a 500k pot in them so it will have a slightly different tone than the EB.. Some like the tone difference some like the 250k EB.. Use your ears and foot..Many of the Nashville players I've worked with use the Boss...As far as either putting them in the loop or through the guitar is dependent on how you like the response and tone.. No right or wrong here.. Your going to get more signal through the pedal from the loop so it's going to react different..Once again use your ears..Keep in mind too that if you use them in the loop your adding quite a bit of cable between the loop and the amp..although the signal there is at fairly low impedance coming from the return.. the added cable length can kill some high end.. I've never had any issues with being able to balance the clean and OD using it right from the guitar.. But that's me.. Hope it Helps..
