Bright cap on first volume control

Post by Darkbluemurder »

In both my modded Fenders I do not have room for a switch to install a bright switch for the ODS channel. I like the sound with both the volume and gain turned up quite a bit (6-7 resp. 8-9) but the sound loses too much sparkle with the pots turned down to 4.

I am considering to hardwire a 33pf to 47pf bypass cap on the volume control as a compromise between fat high gain and sparkling low gain sounds. Has anyone tried this?

Bright caps are only effective at lower volumes, so you won't really lose the high volume tone. As the volume increases, the effect decreases. Don't go too high in value as the volume pot will have a tendency of operating like a switch between 0 and 2. I wouldn't go any higher than 47pF.

Regards, Alan.

Yes, I've tried it and it works ok. I know what you mean by losing sparkle at lower gain settings, the cap puts a lot of that back, plus it tends to tighten up the bass.

Bob, you were spot on in your assumption! Thanks a lot! I used a 33pf which brightens up things just enough at low settings and does not hurt the high gain settings.
