Very nice rj in this case I think going with the PCB is the way I would like to proceed on this amp.

Building my kit

Post by mclmk8d »

I have been following this thread from the beginning, and decided to order the complete kit when it is ready; however, and this is a huge however, most of you know that I am completely lost when it comes to building electronics. The last time I actually built something electronic was probably shop class in high school (yeah, that's a long time ago; I just celebrated my 60th last weekend).

I am buying this for my son Michael. His birthday is on the 15th...at 12:07 AM. I cannot believe he's going to be 20! He loves playing through Diana, and though this may not be quite like her, I would venture to guess that rj's final version will have that beautiful tone that Rockets have.

So I hereby throw open the doors to all of you guys here to build my kit when it is ready to go. Of course, I expect to pay you for the work at what you feel is fair, and I will let you determine that. Hopefully I can have rj send it to you directly, and I will pay all shipping costs to you and my house.

Thanks..Serge (ALL_THUMBS)

Serge,

No sweat, I am on my third one of these now. I will need to get rid of all of them but my original so that the next idea has room on the work bench and then in the storage closet afterward...

If one of the master builders wants to put this together for you I am all for it. If that master builder would also be willing to help us tweak it into perfection that would be way cool...

Update - the transformers have arrived and I am finishing up the first of the PCB board versions of this. I should be ready to start shipping out parts and kits very soon.

This will be a fun project rj.

Serge I could be wrong but maybe this would be a good kit for you to build yourself with the guideness of the forum.

Man I either need to sell some amps or get a second job with all these fine amps, kits and build ideas you guys are coming up with. I never did built one of Dana's kits either.

I don't know if the list for buying one is still open but I wouldn't mind being on the list, this would be a great project to get my feet wet before I decide to go and build a full-size Rocket. PM me with details before I commit though, stuff like price, if there are instructions/schematics, whats included, etc.

Thanks

The transformers have arrived from Heyboer and they look great... I have been swamped with some other deliveries so I have not been able to finish up prototype #3 using the PCB style circuit board but it's near the top of the list now.

I am hopeful that I will not only finish prototype #3 this week but start finalizing the ordering protocol and with any good fortune, start shipping next week.

Buying is is still open and for now I can sell one more at cost before I have to make the commitments of how much more to buy of "everything" from the parts vendors... strat_addict you are in just under the wire. More kits are going to be available, it's just a matter of how soon and how much to charge.

I wanted this to be a forum project so other than introduce the idea and give some "proof of principle" evidence that it will work, it is not a polished amp. I look forward to tweaking this together with all you guys and having some real fun.

I made a little progress on this today. The new power transformers look quite good and it all seems to be going together well.

You can also see one of the other faceplate options.

I have band practice this afternoon but I am hoping to get some wiring done later tonight and then start soldering on the circuit board tomorrow.

I had planned to finish up the prototype this weekend and start sending out kits this week. Unfortunately we received word that my father in law passed away this morning so everything is on hold for another week. I'll be out of town until the first of March.

Briefly - I did finish the #3 amp tonight and it seems like I have the PCB board correct. I'll post a little bit more more as time allows through this week but it looks like everything is going to work out and I had no big surprises or issues to sort out.

Thiele cabinets for V-2 amps

Post by RJ Guitars »

Hello AGF,

I am Finally seeing the end of a long series of interuptions that slowed my intentions for not getting on with this project... thanks to all of you that offered the kind words and have been so patient with me.

I am still on the road home but about to turn the bus toward the house. I plan to be home on April 1 and what better day to kick this effort off than April fools day? I plan to put packages together next week and ship them out ASAP.

One thing I think is worth a mention is the speaker cabinet choices for these amps. I am inclined to believe that the Lil' Devil choice of the Thiele ported cabinet is a good unit for small tube amps. With minimal watts the hardest thing to get out of these amps is likely to be low end. These cabinets should help add that to the balance.

Looking forward to bringing this project on line with you.

Just a word of caution on the cab. This is the same guy I got mine from who advertised his cabs were in stock and would ship with in 3 days of cleared payment. It took him 10 days to ship and 3 weeks for me to get the cab. I know shit happens and I hope it was just a fluke but I just wanted to throw that out there for anyone ordering a cab. Be prepared to wait. You can also builld your own. Here is the link to the plans

I think it would be great to get one of our wood working forum members to knock some of these out and offer them for sale here.

I don't know that vendor, but I am liking the TL-806 I have with an original EVM-12L. Small amps I've put into it sound quite good with very full low end, assuming the amp is passing the bottom octave clearly. (That is to say, not quite on the 9V Smokey Amp, though it's shocking how much of a step up a good speaker makes there.)
