I like 1960s vintage Amperex. I only got two though.DustyBadlands wrote:I ordered a quad from the Sgt. 1981 Saratov EB- EL84's 48+3
" Built for typhoon class attack sub electronic counter measure sonor weapons and fire control". "Absolutely tough as nails with the added bonus of very good sonic quality" Sgt.
Can't wait to try them.
Has anyone started a EL84 shoot out type thread. What brand they are using in there Rockets. Voltage differences, Sonic quality, durability, cost etc.
Would anyone be interested in that?![]()

Yeah, a EL84 shootout would be most excellent using a rocket build. I, too, order a quad set of vintage Saratov's from the Sgt. Looking forward to trying them.DustyBadlands wrote:I ordered a quad from the Sgt. 1981 Saratov EB- EL84's 48+3

Kind of a bummer; I've got a matching set (2 tubes) of old Mullard EL84s that I used in 65 amps London head. Sold head, but kept the tubes. They just collect dust now.
Rocket tubes
The old 6n14n russian tubes are great in Rockets. Full sound and musical...a little thicker mids than a telefunken or Bugle Boy, which are my other favorites for the Rockett...( a little more pure detail and refinement)..
Re: EL84 Tube Shoot Out/ Rocket
If you really want to know you can send tube to me i'll put it on the amplitrex and send the tube back with the results.

Re: EL84 Tube Shoot Out/ Rocket
I received the vintage el84 Saratovs today. I played them for a bit. I must say that these are nice sounding tubes. They're much more articulate in the low end than the JJs I was using. The bass has plenty of bloom and body. The mids were slightly attenuated. The high's seems smooth without being dull or smothered. I thought my rocket build was sounded pretty good. But now, it really sounds terrific.
Thanks Sgt!
Thanks Sgt!

Vintage saratovs? Don't they make most of the new sensor/sovtek tubes

Have no idea. Perhaps someone else can chime in here. All I know is that the tubes I received are 29 years old and sound fantastic.selloutrr wrote:Vintage saratovs? Don't they make most of the new sensor/sovtek tubes

Re: EL84 Tube Shoot Out/ Rocket
Hello,
I decided to to return the EL84 Genalex Gold Lion RI to the dealer. I must say I was very disappointed on how these tubes preformed in my Rocket. . They are not as tough as the Mullards or Saratovs. I'm curious to know if anyone else has had problems with these RI tubes.
I'm currently using Saratov EL84's vintage 1980,s made for the Russian military. To my ears the Saratovs sound the best compared to the New Sensor branded tubes.

Re: EL84 Tube Shoot Out/ Rocket
I bought a set of genelex gold lion ris kt88s for my k80 komet. They lasted about 3 hours and 1 tube went down. I must say they sounded great but I need more than 3 hours out of a tube. I wont be buying the gold lion reissues anytime soon.
Rocket tubes
I've seen a real rocket and it had what I would call an "all star" line up. It was all brittish Mullard tubes. GZ34, EL84's and ECC83's all Mullard. Just for the record. If I remember well I think the ECC83's were long plate.
Saratovs +1
I also have Saratovs in Diana...got them from the Sarge a while back, and the minute I put them in, it was like night and day from the Russian Mullard RIs that were in there...wonderful throughout the scale. It also has a Brimar in V1, a Bugle Boy in V2, and a Valvo in V3, all from the Sarge.

Re: EL84 Tube Shoot Out/ Rocket
For what it's worth, I am running NOS GE 6BQ5/EL84s in both my Rocket and Liverpool. The builds are about 2 years old now and still sounding great. I have also had great results with the NOS 7189s.
Re: EL84 Tube Shoot Out/ Rocket
The tubes sarge sells are much older NOS than the ones made today, and they are a bit different.Vintage saratovs? Don't they make most of the new sensor/sovtek tubes
The shiney black plate sylvainia are also nice sounding tubes, although i'd probably just use them in a Rocket.
Re: EL84 Tube Shoot Out/ Rocket
Avoid all the New Sensor EL84 types except the Sovtek EL84M, which is their military EL84 type. The RI Mullards sound okay, but they are far from being matched directly from NS. The Gold Lions, Tung Sol, Svetlanas, etc.; all crap! Relabeled, untested, Sovteks. There are small differences in construction, but without adequate QA/QC, they suck. There are only a handful of tubes I would use from NS out of there large variety of tubes.
NOS Saratovs, Tesla Hex Plates, Rosnovs, RCAs, GEs, Sylvanias, Philips, etc. These are all good and not super expensive. All those British tubes are spendy these days.

Re: EL84 Tube Shoot Out/ Rocket
If anyone want Russian NOS 'EL84' as commonly 6P14P is voted, be sure that you buy 6P14P-EB (EV,E) that is millitary version. This tube is damn good for 2 reasons:
a)cheap, in some places in Europe, you can get quad for about 15-20$
b)long live, and really hard to kill
There's also 6P15P, but it's more different than EL84 (different pinout probably)
