Another big bottle Rocket w/verb

Post by rawnster »

I had the opportunity to build another 1x12 combo for a friend. He went a little nuts on the faceplate. Pretty unique and cool design. :-) I'm more than pleased with the tone of this build. It's based around a pair of kt-77's. I guess you get a tiny bit better with each build. I'll try to get some clips recorded this week. Anyway, I took a few quick pictures.

Wow, that is really nice! Beautiful workmanship all around. Where did you get the cabinet from?

Can you swap in EL-34's without any changes?

Hey Darin,

Thanks. No, I didn't get a chance to get another gut shot before installing the chassis into the cab. The only difference is the lack of VVR, as is shown in the pic. It took a while to get the VVR working. Thanks for your help! After I had it working a while, and testing the amp with few different guitars and various pedals, I preferred the amp without the VVR. No knock on the VVR at all. In fact, it worked great once I figured out the correct installation. The owner uses a lot of pedals, and the amp just sounded a little more pedal friendly without it.

Thanks rbryerton. Yes, swapping in el34's requires no changes. It's a cathode biased amp. I have the bias set in a range that will handle kt-77's or el34's without blinking.

Hey Tom, thanks. Yeah the faceplate is a piece of 16 gauge mild steel. We created a screen of the design and took it to an acid etcher here in Portland OR. He burned in the design and then rubbed in black ink into the etched areas. Pretty costly, but dang cool looking. :)

The guy who I used to do the faceplates is also a guitarist so he was really happy to see his work being used for an amp. Hopefully I will get another chance to use him. It was a bit of an experiment but I think it came out nice. Has a bit of a worn feel since the etching ate away some of the edge work.
Okay, okay ... it sounds cool, but does it look cool?

How did you implement the reverb?

Rawnster, I had to wait all day to see what your pictures looked like (don't open at work) very nice build as usual. Digging the faceplate and cabinet as well. :)

Which reverb driver and pan are you using with this circuit Rawnster?

Never mine Rawnster I found your old posts on the medium decay.

Cool. I used the Hammond 1750A reverb tranny, and the Accutronics R8AB2A1B short tank, medium delay. It's nice and subtle.
