Stancor 3800 vs 3801

What [if any] is the difference? I have a 3800 on the way which I eventually would like to use in an Express build. Any problems?

Secondly which PT were the original Stancor 3800/3801 OT's coupled with? I tried locating this info in the BOM etc but could not. Appreciate your help.

Last but not least, if I can't locate the original PT which modern PT would you recommend I use? Ideally I would like to have 110V & 220/240V options.

Big difference in the two trannys. The 3800 is rated at 80 ma 30 watts and it's primary is 5k. The 3801 is rated at 150ma, 35 watts and it's primary is 6.6k

Keep the 3800 for a Liverpool as it's the transformer Ken originally used.

I never noticed that before. That seems like a recipe for disaster. It's rated at 30W....there's so much I just don't understand about tube amps. Is it meant for higher B+ applications?

Yup. That's me. Got the new one not the old one in the homebuilt chassis. Paid more than I wanted to but hey...

I put a 3800 in my Liverpool build and I like it a LOT more than the Ceriatone iron that I had in it originally. I'm excited to see what you think MCK...

I was toying with the idea of getting the Ceriatone kit minus the iron. What did you think about the overall quality? I would love to go all authentic parts and collect it over the internet but just don' t have the time & patience to do that. Which PT did you use? Thanks for your help.

MCK I would use the help of some people around here to get most of the stuff and not go on the kit route, I just finished my first express and couldn't be happier with the results. Maybe Allyn or RJ can get you either a pacific or heyboer PT for your project and also chassis and boards, the rest is just components that you can buy at either Mouser or Allied.

Definitely go for the correct parts now that you've got the most important part - the correct OT.

Sure it'll cost a little more but the results will be well worth it, I'm positive.

There are plenty of people here that will help with any questions or specifics related to the build.

I don't know what PTs Ken was using back when he was using the Stancor OTs but either the Heyboer or the Pacific PTs available here have the correct Liverpool voltages and will work well for you.

Actually the old PTs didn't even support 120v. Most were 115 or 117 back then.
