Glaswerks Deluxe Microphone Comparison Clips

Post by dogears »

Here are two clips of the Glaswerks Deluxe Overdrive into the Glaswerks 2X12 loaded with Celestion Heritage G1265s. I am playing my Carruthers CSA (chambered spruce w/humbuckers). Same old backing I have recorded on recently as the track was still loaded in. Pardon the slightly different mixes. These were done one day apart.

Clip one is Royer R121 ribbon mic into the low end EMU 1616M mic pre. Mic was about two inches from grill.

Clip two is an Oktavia MK319 condenser mic into my Millennia Audio STT-1 high end mic pre. http://www.mil-media.com/stt-1.html The Oktavia is a $75 mic btw!! What a bargain..... Mic was about 2 feet back from cab, aimed dead on with -10db pad applied.

Clip 1 http://www.scottlernermusic.com/SOD/TIGwerksR121t2r.mp3

Clip 2 http://www.scottlernermusic.com/SOD/TIGWerksMK319a.mp3 (I should have used the built in high pass in the mic as the lows are slightly "boomy", I can EQ later. None was used on either track)

Thanks for any feedback.

Definitely more "presence" (not in the amp knob sense but in the sound/mix sense) from the Royer. Perhaps it was that high-pass thing you mention, I dunno. However the tone of the first clip is WAY superior to the second clip thru my iPod headphones and my laptop sound. The second clip just sounded kinda flat, especially in comparison. Perhaps 2" back vs. 2' back has an effect as well?

Amp sounds killer. Nice that the Scott clips are coming with more frequency. And speaking of frequency - Royer clip sounds better for me. I would imagine Royer + nicer mic pre would be even betterer.....

How about both mixed together? Multi-mics!

FWIW, the soloed MK319 track sounds much nicer when listening alone. The lows are creating the issue. I will EQ a little when I get home. That should make it sit better in the mix.

For a $75 mike that sound great. Where can one get that mike for that price?

Don't be so hard on yourself. If that is your first amp build, be glad it powers up and makes sound!! Just get in there with your solder iron after reading up for a few weeks. Gary at Glaswerks has been building fine sounding amps for a long time. If you love that tone - buy yourself one!

Both sound good to me with Royer coming out on top. Both together would be interesting. I'm a big fan of using more than 1 mike but I still struggle with getting exactly what I hear in the room onto the recorder.

Thanks guys!!

I remixed the condenser clip with 2db of mids and a slight bass rolloff to sit better and cut more.

Any better?

MUCH better.

Still prefer the Royer. More meat to the tone. More body. Just... more.

But for an $87 mic that's outstanding.

Well part of that is probably the mic proximity. I think the condenser has a desireable openess on the bass that would sit well with a dynamic or ribbon.

Here is my quicky take from the other day of the Bludo using an SM57. Close miced. Much different than the Royer, yet the amps sound kind of similar in person.

Yep, that one is different. More upper mids, it would cut very well.

I think my 2 favorite things about the Royer clip are 1) The "meat" or "body" to the tone. It is very well balanced. 2) The way it captures pick attack is far superior to the other clips. Perhaps this was a performance difference, but somehow I don't think so.

remixed condenser sounds much better. I actually like the SM57 clip more than the Royer but they are both very good.
