Teaser: KT-88 HRM D-clone, well almost

Post by JD0x0 »

So currently i am in the middle of an KT88 HRM build that is my take on a dumble. This is actually my first build!

I used a Weber Halle kit as a base for a chassis and most of the parts will be used except for the mouser caps etc and i'll be sprinkling some of my own flavour on it.

Currently i dont have access to a digital camera so no pics... yet

all i know is this thing is going to be a monster.

Heres some info.

Clean Channel is a modified skyliner, 250k-250k-1M (treble, mids, bass, respectively)
treble cap 330pf ceramic (may get switched to a polypropolene)
Mid .014uf 6PS
Bass .1uf 6PS
No PAB, mid, bright, or jazz or rock switches
120k slope

OD channel is a moddified HRM, 250k,100k,500k (treb, mid, bass)
Treble cap 200pf ceramic
Mid cap .008uf 6PS
Bass .020uf 6PS
33k slope switchable to 100k
there is also my version of a mid boost (or shift) which simply changes the mid cap to a .004uf (6PS) while also changing the bass cap to a .008uf (6PS)

i basicly did this to give a large low mid boost while reducing some of the bass to compensate

edit: Trannys are a 100 watt weber (marshall) PT and Hammond 1650R 100 watt OT. These things are HUGE compared to the 50 watters im used to
More info to come in the future
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them

Here is a quick tip..

The 1650R is a nice transformer.. And should sound good w/88's.. Try and keep the plate voltages around 500v seems to be the sweet spot to my ears... Since that transformer has ultralinear taps after you get it up and running try reversing the polarity on the speaker cable see if you like that better with your speaker configuration..I mentioned this to a customer of mine whom has a 1650 in his combo loaded 6550's He prefuered the cable reversed.. Thought I'd mention it.. Good Luck with the rest of the build..

Thanks Tony,
I've heard about the polarity "trick" and it's definatly worth trying. this is going to be a high plate on the preamp and im hoping for the voltages on the 88's to be around 550-600+

I also did a search for ultra linear taps a few weeks ago and some people seemed to REALLY like what it did to their sound while others seemed to hate it. I guess i have to try both :)
