No.

Press "stop" button at 2:11 or 2:12 and you can get a glimpse of the two 300SL side by side (if one to do the clean stuff and the other one set up for full throttle - or for whatever imaginable other reasons).

And you will have a hard time (only my very personal opinion) to get such a kind of tone with ODS style amps. But of course this will be less clear in a youtube clip then by playing Dumblelands and Singers side by side with ODS style amp. But there are always exceptions. E.g.: An ODS 150W would do the job.

These big Dumble amps (again: IMHO) are on a completely different "energy-level", and I am not (only) talking just about volume here. For me the main difference is, that they do everything you tell them with such a kind of "ease" and "coolness". They are so "musical" and very emotional, even played at low volumes (but shaking neighbor's house is of course fun too!). And the filters of course give you a vast array of tones....

I really really like ODS style amps. Nice pretty "tone-machines" and very cool amps, but compared with "the real stuff" - let's face it - "girl's amps" (no offend intended to all the "High-Heels-Drifters" here!). In this I completely understand how SRV thought about the ODS line.

So really: If you like this kind of tones you hear on this youtube clip, and can imagine how it would sound with perhaps a bit less fx and all - perhaps you should give Brandon a call?

Something else for the true "Dumble Aficionado": If you live near LA there is a simple way to do some Dumble talk. Take your "custom shop" axe and visit Andy Brauer and let him do his magic to your guitar. And while waiting 'till guitar and and bill are ready, you can ask all you ever wanted to know. For a start you could perhaps just ask him: "How did Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler like the "Farris amp" when they recorded in LA" or something like this. He knows all the "stories". But please, be decent and don't leave his shop without paying the bill, as he is not in the storyteller business.

Nice weekend

The 300SL is not a bass amp (of course it can do the job and even be tuned for only doing this job)! Or do you see a bass in the hands of Chris Cross? Or do you think of a reverb as a very common "bass-amp-feature"? Better not to believe every "Dumble rumor".

Have fun and thanks again for posting the clips.

I heard, saw or read somewhere that the advent of MTV really hurt his career because of the appearance thing that became popular for that medium. I've always liked his writing and voice on the studio stuff.

Tony,

Arthur is a great movie and one of my favorites. I should watch that again as it has been a while! This time I will need to pay attention to the music. :)

I was looking at the Dumble pictures.
There is a SSS that has this box on top.
Anybody know what it is?

It looks to be a surge protecter

It looks like the SSS John Mayer owns with different knobs on it

I think he owns the ODS reverb next to it too

Here's a pic of one more (with FET-input).

If you look at the Dumble pics I linked to: Notice the difference in Step-Filter positions:

All the SSS pictured here have seven, but the three 300SL's only six. Some of the later 150 SSS had only six too (Stevie's still seven), as far as I remember now. One of the Dumblelands for guitar I know has even 11 positions for both, Low and High.

I just noticed that Jelle here did a great looking suede covered SSS.

Have fun

Christopher started in Austin Tx. My ex wife used to baby sit for him and his then wife. He always played the hell out a guitar. I saw him live on his first post stardom tour in Houston, Tx. He had made no PR appearances between the release of his first hit song and that tour for a very good reason. He was very obese at the time and his handlers had him on a diet to get him looking more like a rock star. Kind of like the Tony Orlando thing. His first album had no photos of him anywhere for good reason.

I remember his opening act was Jack Tempchin the singer songwriter who wrote peaceful easy feeling. Jack came out with nothing but an acoustic guitar and told stories of his career and played his songs. He was priceless. The crowd booed him off the stage. I wanted to hit ‘em all in the head with a ball peen.

Then CC came out and started a song on a darkened stage. All you could see were the lights from the equipment. Damn what a rhythm section he had that night. The band was tight as hell and they sounded fantastic even in that god awful Houston Coliseum. Once the crowd was into the song, the lights came up on CC and all around me the crowd was murmuring about how fat he was. They were shocked. Let’s face it; his voice doesn’t go with a 300 pound frame so I guess folks had some other mental picture of how he might look.

I sat there that night and really enjoyed his playing and the band. He played a song he said was new and going to be on his next album called “Mary Ann”. Man it rocked! It wasn’t on “Another Page” and I’ve never seen it released since. A poppy version came out on a Japanese release in 1980. I left that concert realizing what shallow shits most music fans are. Yeah, CC doesn’t fit the MTV persona, but he is one hell of a guitar player. I saw him out here in SoCal a few years back and he still rocks.

He's touring right now too:

Wow. Please don't take offense (I realize everyone has an opinion) but that was FAR from "some of the best amp tone ever"! Jesus, turn off that crappy chorus already!!! To me, you could EASILY get that tone with an off-the-shelf Gallien Krueger...WTF?!?

When I think of killer Dumble tone that is definitely NOT it...and I love CC too.

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with the guitar tone either.
Very 80's with the chorus but he seemed to have decent chops.

I knew he had a weight problem but never heard the back story about it.

That's a voltage regulator, that pic was taken at an amp fest in Japan. I believe that is in-fact #002 that is now owned by John Mayer.
