mini z
did anyone build one yet? how did it turn out ? got a lay out?
Re: mini z
The Mini-Z is basically the same amp as the Gibson GA-5, made by Mojo, etc.
Re: mini z
Here is what was in the zip file going around about 1 1/2 years ago.

Re: mini z
12AX7 + 6BQ5 or ECC83 + EL84 if you prefer.What is the tube compliment on this amp?
Re: mini z
5 watt amp 12ax7 and EL84 there are plenty of PT/OT choices to be had.
Re: mini z
How's it comparing to other amps of this sort? I heard demos years back and all of them were a horrendous, fuzzy sounding mess, so I lost interest in the model. I'm happy to take a second look, though.
Re: mini z
I have no idea I have never heard one.
Doesn't look like it would be worth the effort.
Re: mini z
Fire up the one at marguerite's sometime. It's actually not awful. It's sort of a fuzzier looser breakup than some of the other Zs, but it does it's own cool thing. I'd never buy one, and probably would never bother building one but it could be a cool thing to have around in the studio once in a while.M Fowler wrote:I have no idea I have never heard one.Doesn't look like it would be worth the effort.

Re: mini z
Ben I saw it there but funny how I didn't bother to play through it.
Re: mini z
I built one, and wasn't all that impressed. It was uninpiring. Maybe the iron is really critical - not sure, but mine was not a keeper - I stripped the chassis after about a month.
Re: mini z
I have heard a newer Mini-Z. It was the version with the giant wire wound pipe resistor for attenuation mounted on top of the chassis. Yes, it did sound good. Yes it did sound different and yes I believe the iron choice is significant.
I know this is a Z MD amp but much like the Sampson amps owe their unique sound, (like it or not), to the OT choice and implementation.
The OT is important in this case I believe, as everything else is easy to duplicate.
Just because you have the identical transformer doesn't mean you are using it the way he does.
hint hint,
