Ceriatone Transformers experience?

Post by nickm57 »

I built the amp about 18 months ago.

Now this amp has over 300 shows to it's credit and is my main giging amp.
It was used on a Major Australian musical for over 8 shows a week for 3 months.

Tonight power up----> main power fuse is blown????another fuse same. no valves same..... Had to use another amp for the show.

Just got home from the show, had a look does not smell good. I'll check but I'm tired and not willing to go further after a show.

Anyone experience problems with the PT?
I know not many other users will have put that much mileage on an amp.

....Check the rectifier diodes or pull the 2 B+ wires from the diodes...Replace fuse..... Power back up if it blows it again chances are bad transformer.....If you smelled something before the fuse went check your screen resistors... I have replaced 1 ...Good Luck..

Thanks

Lifted the B+ and the heaters still popping power the fuse.
I think the smell is the transformer. Doesn't smell like resistors
(':(')
(i know that smell)

I'll email Nik.

"Lifted the B+" can mean many things - make sure you disconnect the transformer from the diodes before you say the last rites. A light bulb test fixture saves you a lot of fuses.

light bulb----thanks.
I removed (disconnected) each section of the PT from the amp both leads.
B+, Heaters, Aux supply, and Bias. 4 fuses later......

Mount it to a nice piece of oak for display in remembrance of the over 300 shows it performed. :)

It had overheated.
That is not a shadow on the B+ side of it the paper is darker.
This thing smells bad.

Could not find a short with a multimeter or I would give more details. If someone can give me a way to work out which I'll let you know.

I picked up Triode's Fender 100w set for my ODS, good price for Magnetic Components iron.

I was tempted to get one, I might convert this amp to 100watts and get the output trans.
But Nik sent me a new 100watt power transformer in 3 days. Nice service.
So I'm now using a ceriatone 100watt power transformer in a 2 6l6 amp(50 watt).

I have a question I'm popping the 500ma fuse from the center tap to ground on the the B+ , I notice on the #124 they do not have this fuse. Now the 100watt ceriatone version is running a 1am fuse.
Is this happening because the 100watt transformer is flowing more current?
All other parts check out (Diodes and caps).

It's more than likely blowing due to the in rush of current.... Try the 1 A.. If it blows that you have a problem
