Preamp board sizes?

Post by galtjunk »

I found some old vector board at a surplus store. It has .93 holes spaced at .265 and is .925 thickness as near as I can measure.

I did get 6 boards that are large enough to cut 2 express boards from and a bunch of perfectly cut ps boards at 18x13 holes.

Most of it is only 32 holes long. I know that the Express board is 8 holes wide by 35 holes long.

How long are the Liverpool and Rocket boards?

Te Preamp board is the same size for all 3 amps. The Liverpool Power Supply board has a slightly smaller cutout on one side, but is otherwise identical to the Express.

The Rocket does not use a PS board.....

Gary,

Good to hear from you again, I've kinda missed your input lately.

I agree with Ron on the Preamp boards, but I've seen a few variations on the power supply boards. The Liverpool "Ginger" is the extreme in different. I also had noticed the same thing that Gary mentions about one full sheet of Vectorbord is just right to make two power supply boards and two preamp boards. This is better use of the material than the Ginger amp which only allows one power supply board and two preamp boards. I've seen Liverpool builds and Express builds using identical cutouts in the old perf board (but obviously different layouts). If we had pictures of all 80+ Wrecks built I would expect we'd see a few iterations including some styles that we don't know about.

There is also the later amps made from the white colored board using different hole spacings and this moves the cutouts and components somewhat. These variations allow me to believe that there is not just one critical layout for a Wreck power supply board.

Ginger was THE first Trainwreck amp ken built as we know them today. I would class it as a prototype if you will. Not only did it have a different power supply layout it had a 1/2 power switch and adjustable line out. None of Ken's later amps had these features or the same power supply board AFAIK. I built a clone of Ginger a few years back before we had any pics of any of the later Liverpools. This layout works fine and sounds as good as any of the other Liverpool amps I have built using the later style layout. It would make perfect sense to me for him to refine his design as he went just like any other builder does. If you can find a way to do it better and cheaper and keep the same sound and build quality then you would be a fool not to do so IMHO.

Not only is the hole spacing different on the white perf the hole diameter is also a different size.

Here is a pic of my Ginger clone from April of 2006
