Bandmaster Reverb chassis rescue - what to do?

Post by mlp-mx6 »

Folks, I'm looking for suggestions. It's a 40W tube-rectified head that has been butchered.

I'm up for just about anything, but the "ultimate clean" amp would be very cool. What do you think?
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

I took a Bassman that was butchered, but had the original OT and built a Rocket Reverb with EL-34's. Basically it's a Rocket preamp, single tube reverb and EL-34 output section. Excellent cleans until you hit about #5 on the volume, ear bleed loud.

I modded the tone stack, replaced the 5-pF treble cap with a 250pF, plus I upped the 500pF coupler on V1a to a .001uF. The rest can be found on the Trainwreck files section somewhere.

I use it for my clean sounds with a head switcher. A Dumble clone for dirt and crunch, the Bassman/Rocket for cleans.

Seems to me that a trashed Bandmaster Reverb is a natural for a Vibroclone.

Here's an article I came across recently about how Stevie's was set up :

Thanks for posting that. :D
I hadn't seen that article before.

I saved it so I can read it thoroughly.

FYI, here's a recording of my Bassman modded as I described above. The cab is a 2x12 Peavey combo that I modded to Dumble HRM. I use a head switcher so I can pick whichever amp I want. I'm using an Edwards Les Paul I bought in Japan a few years back.

Bob, I like your Rocket reverb idea too, I looked in the T-wreck files and couldn't find the schem - do you have a link to it ?

BTW, I dug the clips of your Peavy/Dumble in the dumble discussion. It's cool to hear clips of that amp playing rock.

MLP - If you do a search for "SSS" in the dumble discussion there are a lot of ideas for loud 'n clean amp circuits.

Agreed, but it seems that the power section of a SSS is quite key to the sound, and I don't think I can coax that kind of thing out of a Bandmaster Reverb chassis.

True that, I was just mentioning it for other people reading this thread that might be unfamiliar. Although, you could just unload the iron on fleabay and get some beefy stuff that could handle 2X6550 in ulatralinear mode.

Well, remember that I used 2xEL34 instead of 4xEL84, but here's the info I went on.
