A Trainwreck Thread
I don't know how many of you guys visit The Gear Page but this guy started a thread on Trainwreck amps and I thought you guys might find it interesting.
In true TGP fashion it has gone 9 pages so far......

I feel nauseous and I have a headache, I read all 11 pages, there must be a 12 step group somewhere for this sort of compulsion. I'm serious I think I need help. I kept "using" by reading the next post only to say "never again" in the hung over apathy of shameless self promotion and unqualified arrogance.

Great - someone redirected them to AmpGarage.
Thanks for stepping up, Dana and Glenn. You tried.
I don't look forward to the new show.

Re: A Trainwreck Thread
Where else can someone jokingly and ridiculously pretend to be steven segal and continue to get requests for band auditions on a weekly basis years later?
Re: A Trainwreck Thread
Quoting one of his posts:I don't know how many of you guys visit The Gear Page but this guy started a thread on Trainwreck amps
"Right now we are noticing how microphonic the first preamp tube can be. For those of you that have a Trainwreck or clone try lightly tapping the first tube next to the guitar jack to see what we mean. We are also noticing how the sound changes as we tweak the bias, change tubes, use different speakers, and play different guitars on the amp. It can make quite a difference."
Wow, sound changes when you use different speakers or guitars. I'm überflabbergasted.
Re: A Trainwreck Thread
What is it with these left coast rocket scientists. I would be scared to death to be an astronaut after hearing from Mooreamps and now this Guy. I have never seen such an egotistical bunch in my life.
Re: A Trainwreck Thread
My favourite bit was how Ken started with 40uF on the first filter and then must have upped it to 80uF because of hum caused by the high ripple. But you'd have to have built 100 power supplies to make that connection.
Alan Phillips made mention here a long time ago that Ken's first 'Wreck', Ginger, actually had 2x 80uF filter caps as the first filter node. So he hardly started with 40 and upped it, but demonstrably started with 160 and reduced it, either because he considered 160uF was overkill for the application or that 80 gave a better feel and/or tone. It probably also made for an easier-to-manage 3x2 cap stack using the 40s and 20s.
Or maybe he wanted the lower ESR that a pair of caps over a single cap of double the value would have. Who knows?

Re: A Trainwreck Thread
I enjoyed, for lack of a better euphemism, the bit about "you need to consider the culture, the politics, the hair styles and the weather"
Well, OK, I paraphrase but, wow, what a bag o' gas.
Coming here soon!
Beavis and ...
Or is that Travis??? I'm so bad with names.

Re: A Trainwreck Thread
OMG, I just couldn't make it all the way through.
"I see all of the documentation over at Amp Garage on the TW, and have read it thouroughly. That is why we know of the mistakes and how hard it is to follow. Still, they have done lots of good work"
And to quote from Mark Norwine, god bless him:
"I, too, am an old-world, by-the-math amp designer, and I knew Kenny. We discuused math vs. tone many times. All I can say is:

Re: A Trainwreck Thread
I bet he doesn't post pics or clips. He has said nothing but BS so far, and I read all 12 pages
(what a big waste of time)
Re: A Trainwreck Thread
Don't feel guilty, I read all of it too!!
As I said there, I will start my first express build, please be patient with me guys cause i will start asking questions.... and I trust all the info here for sure. I got most of the "right parts" as seen in Francesca with the exception of a few things that I don't think could make a diference but I wanna hear opinions please.
I got regular alpha pots 1/2 watt and this is cause i believe once you know what settings are good there's no need to be moving the knobs really.
The other thing is the electrolytics, man oh man!! 6 mallory caps for 120? uhmm, I will use F&T's instead. I know ken said before he preferred mallory over sprague but I think F&T's were not available when he was building. We will never know if he would like those but, I had used them before and I did.
Any opinions guys? I will start building next week for sure....

Re: A Trainwreck Thread
What a load of absolute shite....
I sometimes wonder if I should take the BOMs and layouts out of the TW files section to keep arseholes like this pair out of our hair.
I have been in aerospace for almost 30 years and am a EE, but I would never have the gall to post something like this crap. And just cause you're a "rocket scientist" does not make you anywhere an expert on tube amplifiers and all of the subtle nuances that go on with them. I didn't know a damn thing about tubes until I studied the posts on many forums and certainly did not open mouth (except to ask stoopid question or 12).
If he starts this shit here, I vote for a swift and decisive ban!

Funny read at least. You can't take this dude seriously. One amp and I am now a master amp builder!
Question: Who's kit was used?

Re: A Trainwreck Thread
I have tried to spend some time over at the gear page, but the shear amount of misinformation that gets spread around over there drives me out in short order. It does make me appreciate the Ampgarage however.
Just imagine how much more awesome the old Fender, Marshall, Trainwreck, and Dumble amps would have been had they been designed and built by a Rocket Scientist.........I think this dude should volunteer to play his first amp build on the moon......
