2x12 vs 1x12?

Post by doveman »

My ODS is a Brown Note ... really love it ... found that a single 1x12 EVM12L in an open back cab was really great. I run the amp with 6L6s at 33w ... so the 200w EVM12L speaker is never really stretched. Wondering if a single 2x12 open back cab would sound any better. Brown Note has a couple ... Custom Cab and Compact Cab (both 2x12). Anyone know about them?

Kinda slow traffic over at BN although I did post and send a PM over there. Also open to more info on other 2x12 cabs ...

I have a cheap 2 x 12 cab with EVM 12L's and those speakers sound great.
I can only imagine if I had a better cabinet.

I may make one or splurge on a better one some day.

For me, a 2 x 12" is better in every way - except the load in/out

Probably a lot to that ... funny story ...

At our last gig ... an outside gig ... I was a bit worried about the 33w D'Lite outside. So I stacked up the two 1x12 speakers with a mic on the top one. Did a sound check ... sounded pretty full. Come to find out the top speaker cab (the one with the mic) was not plugged in. All of the sound was coming from the bottom slant cab ... probably through my vocal mic.

Hooked up the second cab and it sounded pretty good outside. Obvioulsy, worked better with a mic on the actual speaker. But I was the most suprised person there when I discovered the top cab wasn't plugged in.

Just notice that when I have these two 1x12 EVM12L sitting side by side that it sounds pretty full. Wondering about a 2x12 ... probably best to leave well enough alone. :)

1x12 is plenty. 2x12 will fill the area with more sound but two 1x12 would be the best choice as you could spread them out and angle them for a much fuller sound.

I use a 2x12 and a 1x10 rotating speaker cab (Leslie but 16lbs instead of 200 lbs) loaded with alnico webers.

they sound amazing inside completly fill the room with sound, like being infront of a surround sound stereo.

havent tried it outside yet

1x12 is pretty beamy in a live situation. Off that not much is happening.
With a 2x12 you can play at a slightly lower volume, because of the spread and the rest of the band can hear you.
The Vertical 2x12 are great too as you don't need to lift the box to you ear height.

We are talking smaller gigs here were you don't put any guitar into fold back.

Another thing I'm considering is another Coyote Cab ... basically a 14" base and top ... square box convertible to match the slant back in the bottom of this picture. Then the slant cab would be on top ... square on the bottom. Probably run sealed on the bottom ... open on the top. Sort of a 2x12 "slant cab stack". Then I would put my Celestion G1265 back in the original BN cab.

What do you think? The whole thing would be about 4" shorter than this picture but a little deeper.

4 inches smaller than the picture? i didnt know they made speakers that small :P

but seriously thats a pretty good idea, i still think that if you spread cabs out one left one right you'll get a fuller sound.

but that is an awesome idea for a stack

My original idea was what you see in the picture with the slant on the bottom, but that puts the speaker paths crossing. Is does work though. It's not quite as stable as I wanted either. So if I put the 14x19 base ... with the slant on the top, it will act similar to a Marshall stack ... sort of ,,, a bit shorter and deeper.

Anyway I always thought the "stack" was a good idea ... it gets that 2x12 vertical thing going ... plus the individual pieces are easier to lift (with EVM12L).

My other thought is just another D'Lite 1x12 ... side by side ... like you are talking about. Of course the BN cab costs about twice as much but similar quality. I could still drop the G1265 in the separate slant cab.

Not decided what to do yet. But always thinking about it.

I like a single 15. I am currently using a 15" Weber Bluedog. It's very organic and big sounding

I've tried several 1x12's, a Thiele with an Emi Delta Pro 12A then later an EVM12L, now I have the EVM in a Coyote and I've tried it open and closed. I've also tried a closed back with a Warehouse V30 and I keep coming back to a 2x12.

My main gigging amp is a 2x12 Peavey converted to a Dumble with an Emi Swamp Thang and a Tonker. I also have an open back 2x12 with WGS V30 and G12H copies. Both sound, to my ears, richer and fuller, especally at low volumes, which is where I live.

Do you think the 2x12 in one cab makes a difference - or - would two 1x12 cabs do the same thing for you with those speakers?
