Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp

Re: Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp
I'm keeping this size challenged Rocket well grounded and no acceleration or levitating capabilities.
Re: Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp
A levitating amp...now wouldn't that be cool ......
BTW - was there ever a "Viper" amp...?

Pretty sure Fuch has some metal amp called the Viper.Aurora wrote:A levitating amp...now wouldn't that be cool ......![]()

Re: Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp
I was looking this the other day using the same tube.

Mini Collider
Here are a couple of thoughts. How about "Mini Collider" in honor of the LHC's first "wreck"? I really like the idea of building this around a turret board and soldering the tubes vs sockets is fine with me.
This is gonna be fun!

Re: Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp
I agree I would rather just solder them to the board then try to figure out getting sockets or using IC sockets.

Re: Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp
Good words guys...
The boards will be turret or with the option of eyelets. I haven't actually looked closely at the design to see if any of the connections are too close for 1/8" eyelets or not.
The tube mounting area has 8 holes in the DIP socket orientation. You can have the option of not using that socket and just running the leads through those holes and going straight to the appropriate connecting point. I don't necessarily try to make everybody happy, but in this case it may just have happened by accident.
I've had some guys ask about PCB boards. I don't design those myself but I have given my circuit board design to a PCB designer and he said he'll work up a design fo me. Perhaps someday those will be available although I don't expect anything right away. I tend to like the turret board in part because it reminds of the Trainwreck style of doing things.
thanks for everything,
rj

Re: Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp
rj sounds good to me.
Its hard to tell on that photo of the tube I uploaded but the tube data sheet shows the separation from pin 1 and 8. I am not familiar with this tube at all so this will be an eye opener.

V-2 -- 2nd Prototype Finished
Hello AGF,
It has been a long time since I decided to go forward with this amp as a complete kit. I am finally getting close to actually being able to offer it to you as promised way back ago.
My apologies to everyone for a very slow delivery on these, I lost my father back in late December and as that time approached and since then amplifier projects have not been a priority for me.
Tonight I finished a 2nd V-2 prototype using a CNC milled eyelet board and incorporating 8 pin IC sockets. As I built the eyelet board I found that there was really a lot of work to running individual wires from the IC sockets to the eyelets. It would be way simpler to run the wires directly from the tubes and solder them to the eyelets and forget about the IC sockets. However, that will leave you to worry about how to change a tube out somewhere down the road. All other forms of small 8 pin sockets seem to be prohibitively rare and/ or expensive.
All this lead me to design a 3rd prototype using a printed circuit board. Those have already been delivered and that will be what I now believe is the final circuit board for this amp...
For now, prototype #2 works extremely well and sounds a lot like prototype #1. There is a subtle tone difference between the amps, possibly due to the my use of different coupling caps in this build.
I used Mallory 150 coupling caps, 6112 preamp tubes, 6024 Phase inverter tube, and 5902 output tubes.
The output transformer is the same model number but the power transformers are quite different. For prototype #2 I used an oversized EDCOR 125-0-125 tranny, that is just about too big for the job. I have 120/240 power transformers coming that are more like the Stancor on Prototype #1. This is the last piece needed before I can start sending out kits for those with an inclination to build one of these.
All the guys that signed up to build one of these I'll be getting a note out to you very soon to let you know more info on when, what, and how much, etc..
Thanks
rj

Re: Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp
Those are really sweet, rj! Sounds great from your clips, also. What is the output of this little guy, about 5-10W or so?
If there's still room, I'd like to join in on the build with you guys.
And not to put a damper on things, but I'm sorry to hear the news about your father, rj; my deepest condolences.

Re: Dwarf Tube Rocket Amp
Thank you guys...
I have not done the math on the power output but these are said to put out a couple watts. That is what makes them kinda cool. They are working pretty hard by the time they get loud enough to be useful.
Rob, no sweat, I'll add your name to the list.
thanks,
rj
