Yes the overdrive was probably not raw enough, too smooth for his tastes.
He used the cranked Fender's for his tone and the TS-808 for singing leads.
Curious a few times I have seen him live on video where he was using the Marshalls for his clean tone.

Funk,
Amp and playing sounds mighty fine. Would love to see a pic of the setup -seems like those guitars are getting scarce.

Sorry Funk, that was my attempt at dry humor (stating the obvious).
How come all the nice tone clips seem to be coming from your amps lately? And now the fine playing too, nice work.
Those SSS with stevie were LOUD and spanky. When I saw him play them he had them miked behind plexiglass and they were still way too loud. Totaly different beast than Lindley's when turned up.

Welcome. I can tell you what it is I like about it that I think sets it aside, and that is that you have a relaxed approach. You play a little behind the beat and you're neither in a hurry when you bend notes nor do you overshoot (pitchwise). Most of the takes I have heard of this tune on the internet (and yes, ER... there is that guy you mentioned who cut the tune before, and there is yet another sguitarist named Clapton something or other that did a decent version of itFunkalicousgroove wrote:wow thanks gil

Can you suggest an affordable supplier for 30% pots?Funkalicousgroove wrote: My 1M controls are 30% taper so you'd probably have to set off the shelf pots higher on the volumes.
thanks

I have them custom made, AFAIK the smallest # you can buy is 1000pcs per value-

I'm not sure the taper but the PEC pots you can get from Digi-Key are about the closest taper I've found available commercially. The Claristats West has are about the same as well.llemtt wrote:Can you suggest an affordable supplier for 30% pots?Funkalicousgroove wrote: My 1M controls are 30% taper so you'd probably have to set off the shelf pots higher on the volumes.

Those PEC, Clarostat, and alpha are 15%, the CTS from Mojo, Tubes and more, etc are 10% taper. I went through EVERYTHING before I bit the bullet and bought the custom CTS pots.

I wonder why they don't make them that way anymore?
Anybody have an idea about that?

If you want to 'roll your own' you can use the info on RG's Secret Life of Pots page to simulate a 30% taper. If my math is correct, to simulate a 1M/30% taper audio pot, you would use a 2M linear pot with a 1M resistor between lugs 2/3. So, at 50% rotation (midpoint), V_out would be ~33% (1/3) of V_in. Worth a try, I guess.
I think the 10-15% tapers are closer to a logarithmic curve than the 30%. That would more closely mimic how we hear apparent volume. So, at 50% rotation it would seem to be 50% of max volume. The 30% taper would seem to ramp up faster, so at 50% rotation it would seem more like ~75% of max volume.Structo wrote:I wonder why they don't make them that way anymore?

This is true only up to 1982/3, when he recorded "Texas Flood" with Jackson Brownes Dumbleland and got his first SSS.Structo wrote:Yes the overdrive was probably not raw enough, too smooth for his tastes.
He used the cranked Fender's for his tone
Since then he used his SSSs for "his tone" (live) and sometimes mixed these with flavors of some other amps (studio).
