ZIF Sockets for Mini tubes

Post by RJ Guitars »

Has anyone ever had any experience with ZIF sockets? I don't know what the current and voltage ratings are but it would be pretty simple to change a sub miniature tube out using these.

The IC sockets Dana uses on his Lil Devil work real well. If not those I would suggest hard soldering as well. These tubes are built to last a long long time and since we will be building the amps ourselves it would be fair to assume we can swap them in future if need be. Just IMHO.

MCK,

I agree with your thoughts on the small IC sockets. My latest iteration of the V-2 board uses 8 pin DIP sockets.

For me the Zip sockets are a curiosity to explore at some other point.

I believe ZVEX solders in the tubes directly. I recall when I first saw those amps and read about tube replacement. I didn't think it sounded like fun to have to unsolder and resolder a tube but you are correct about the long life expectancy of these little rascals. With a stackable DIP socket you can actually solder the tube to a 2nd socket and have the tubes preloaded if that matters...

Speaking of ZVEX, I hooked up with Aspen Pittman when I went looking for tubes. He has sold Groovetubes to Fender and I suppose he is going into retirement. He told me that ZVEX bought every 5902 he could find for him. He also said the pedal market has really drained most of the sub miniature preamp tubes from the market. However, I was able to find more than enough for our efforts and it seems that there is still a decent supply out there for the hobby level efforts.

thanks for input,

rj

Amp Name

RJ,
Not to hijack the thread but you could name it after the Little Feat song, Rocket in my pocket. Then the PC dwarves would leave you alone.

:D

Thanks,
Kenny

Hey Kenny thank you and Welcome aboard. You make #10 for us and I am greatly pleased to have you along for the journey. Send me a PM with an email address and I'll include you on some of the mundane progress details and I'll try not to choke up the creative part of this thread with that drivel.

As for a PC deviation, when applied to humans certain descriptive forms are for sure inappropriate. As for tubes, well these little rascals have been dealt a cruel cross to bear...

The V-2 is the name for the group build version of this amp.

As for the Little Feat Song, How could you not love those guys? "Spanish Moon" is my personal favorite.

You could also name it Alice, as in "To the moon, Alice!" from The Honeymooners.

Pocket Rocket!

Yeah, those IC sockets that are round may work.

Shot Glass Valves?

After all, shot glasses aren't big, but their contents definitely aren't lollywater.

SDC - or Space Data Corporation- developed a small rocket in the early 70s, named "Viper" , to supersede the old Loki used for meteorological rocket soundings.
The "Viper IIIA", appx 10 ft with it's little payload, was a potent little rascal, accelerating at about 130 Gs.......
