Has anybody built a wreck with the Stancor 3801 output iron?
I have used all kinds experimenting. The NOS Stancors, heyboers, pacific, some stancor hifi, and others. All of the ones made, sound really good.
The Stancor is geting hard to find,But the thing is,between all of them you may hear only a slight difference.
So depending on ones ear, or what they like, someone may like one over the other. But they are all very good,so you really can't go wrong.
Even the real Trainwrecks used different trannys over the years,so i'm sure they would also be about the same as what most of us have gone through. Pacific,Marstran,Heyboer, are all good.
My brother Dana Built a Liverpool that used a Stancor 3800, 30watt OT, and it also sounded really good. And another Express using an old OT from a motorola stereo from 1959,,which sounded very good.
I put a 3800 in my Liverpool as well and it's killer. I originally built it with the Ceriatone iron fully intending to switch it out with Moose's to hear the difference. Then I came into a couple 3800s and tried one of those instead. There was a pretty big difference, for the better IMO.
note the date on the thread where i posted this info.--this stuff has been known for a few yrs now. i had heyboer make me some of their express output trannies way back then as well with m19/26ga and made amps with each and could tell very little if any diff. both sound very good. i have an orginal a3801 but have yet to build an amp with it, but i know richie has done so before and says it sound killer. rh

The Pacifics that Allyn sells: secondaries are both 260V and 300V

actually they are close, but not quite. the data sheets were based off an old thordarson trannie (i believe) with a 117 pri. (with the 280-250-0-250-280@300ma hv sec). so if you actually measure the windings unloaded with 120 on the pri. you'll get something like 292-0-292 (i believe) for the higher taps. on the heyboer 300-0-300 trannies it'll be probably 4-6v over that so they'll probably measure 305 n.l. most trannie winders will go a few volts/turns higher on the hv sec so it'll meet expectations on idle.
same with the 6.3v and 5v windings as well---and it could be a bit more or less wire depending on the ease of position of taking the copper lead out to the edge of the wrap for lead attachment. rh
I've been in real wrecks that measures 410V on the secondaries and as low as 375V on the secondaries...They all sounded good! The Pacifics I had made are from ken's line card...but nothing more! No crazy mojo! I just ordered what Ken did to get the same steel, winding patterns, and cores he did.
The OT's sound very good...a little sweeter (if that can be quantified at all) to my ears. They sound the most like the ones in the real wrecks I've heard. Francesca was probably the worst sounding of the real ones I've played. It was however, made the same way as the others which made it a great starting point to base builds on.
I've mentioned it before....Build the amp with the most correct parts you can...Mallory PVC series caps, Proper trannys, and proper preamp parts (CF resistors, Silver Mica Treble cap and low esr bypass caps) and your in the ball park. The trick then is to tube it to sound like real ones you've heard and played. There really isn't a secret. You just have to know what the real ones sound and feel like.

What were the voltages on V1? Did Ken scale the dropping string to maintain a similar gain structure throughout the preamp or are these things just all over the map?
What matters - the color of the resistors or the voltages???
Great conversation, I am building a bench model Express out of left over parts, so that I have an amp I can experiment with different resistances etc. Problem is I can't get a set of transformers for it. Heyboer is out of the 6600 primary OT and I contacted Allen the 1st of this month requesting a Pacific set. He e-mailed back and said he should have some in a week. I have e-mailed him several times since and recieved no reply....................HELP! Does anyone know where I can get a set of transformers for an express with a 6600 primary? I would prefer Pacific, but will take Heyboer if someone has them in stock. Can I call Pacific or Heyboer directly and order the CORRECT Trannys? Or do I have to go through a second party? Thanks in advance.
Allynmey has order coming for Pacific which should not be long I wouldn't think I have an order for some as well. Good things take time. You can PM Allyn for more information.
rjguitars has transformers but not sure what he has in stock for either Heyboer or Pacific. http://www.rjguitars.net/
I will be getting some more express sets soon. I have a set order delivered to me every 30-45 days automatically for my builds. Lately i've been getting extras for people who have asked me. I don't really want to become a full time tranny salesman though.
Remember, I did the chassis initially to help some people source quality chassis when no one had access to a good chassis company and then the trannys for the same reason.
When I have extras I put them up for sale to keep things rotated and to help out some people. Moose has quality stuff too!
In this economy it's hard to spend an extra $1000/month to have them laying around just to help out.........
I appreciate all the help you folks give to the members here.
Allyn, I sent you a PM.
Trying to complete a "bench" model, so I can do some tinkering.
It seems that I just caught everyone at a time when they are out of the 6600 OT's. Thanks again.

I am going to be stocking the standard Trainwreck transformers for the Rocket, Express, and Liverpool amps. I am hopeful to eventually carry all of the "Official Specification" trannies from Heyboer and Pacific, as well as those custom wound for me by EDCOR. In time I'll try to go ahead and supply the Euro-voltage units but that is in the future.
I should have Rocket output trannies (Heyboer HTS-8093-1) again within the next week or so.
I have a few Heyboer Express/Liverpool Power and Output trannies in stock.
I have Pacific tranny sets for the Express on order and expect them any time.
It is my intention to make these trannies available to AGF members on a no-profit basis until further notice. I want to make sure we all have them available as needed. When Moose is able to carry stock on these again I'll happily give that option back to him. I cannot say enough kind things about his dedication, service and price. I also recommend Allyn and I know he has referred several customers to me so this is about supply and availability and making life easier for the AGF builders.

I originally wanted a dual tapped 5200/6600 OT. I went and looked at your post in the for sale section, I am at a loss as to how much you want in U.S. cash. LOL.
Could you tell me what you want in US money and how much shipping might be?? I am leaning towards the 6600 Pacific set, but might try the dual tap Heyboer.
When you say it is not a new "vintage" what does that mean?? Is this a new tranny, a NOS tranny, or a older previously used tranny?
