PT Oddity

Post by gearhead »

Just installed a PT I've had for a while (bought new) in a new build, and noticed something odd.

All the laminates are slight leaning, in unison. The whole affair sits flush, but if you use a right angle square, from top to bottom each laminate is off by about a 1.5-2mm.

Would this have any effect on output effeciency and/or harmonics?

Can you show us a picture? I'm thinking poor job when stacking the core or to few lams to fill the coil former/bobbin.

Don't have pic capability now, so here's a representative drawing of the core laminates from the side:

Has it been dropped at some stage?

If its not misbehaving, don't worry leave it alone. Tube tech was always 20%
any ways. Maybe you can get MM to clone it.

Have only done the physical install; no cutting or soldering.

Maybe I'll just push on and see how it goes. If this turns out to be a killer amp, will tell folks that it was custom wound. LOL.

Dropped? Maybe in transit, but not by me. Wouldn't be surprised but can't see if there was any room for it to shift like that, the way it was packed.

3PTs and 3 OTs in a USPS flat rate box. It was hilarious when I showed up at the Post Office to claim it. Told the guy that it would be a pretty heavy package. He just waved me off and went to get it. Shoulda seen the look on his face when he brought it back, HAHA!

Was the box damaged?
Seems like with 6 transformers it would be a very unstable package.

No box damage, and it was actually very stable. All the trannies were snuggly bundled together as a block of iron.

However it happened, I just wanted to get a mash of opinions.

What brand are they?

I would contact the manufacturer if you are concerned about how that will affect the operation of the PT.

Happy story, the Manufacturer (Heyboer) replied in less than 12 hours:

"I am sure it is a shipping thing - dropped-
It should still work fine however, if you like you can send it back to us
and we can fix it for you."

Talk about service!

Now I gotta figure out if if I want to send it back, or just make it a character-defining element.

It's great that Heyboer is standing by their product and offering to fix it (even though they didn't drop/bend it!). That said, you ordered a transformer not a parallelogram so I'd be tempted to send it back. It would suck to get it installed only to find out that you're not happy with it. Should you ever sell the amp, the warped transformer might be called into question costing you value. Just a thought.
