Edcor PT gremlins

Post by Ken Moon »

I guess I jinxed myself by saying nice things about Edcor PTs in the Trainwreck area

About 10 minutes later, I put some tubes in my latest 18watt build, and there was a crazy rattling sound.

The voltages all checked OK, and it sounded fine except for the metallic crunch (not the good kind, this was more like shaking a metal box full of nails and screws).

So I turned it right-side up and popped in all new tubes just as a quick check, fired it up and it still rattled like crazy. I could hear that it was coming from the PT.

So I squeezed the PT bells with one hand, and the rattle went away :?

I gave it a couple more good squeezes, and checked to make sure the bolts were tight (they were).

Now the rattle is all gone and the amp sounds great. But I don't trust it. So I guess I'll just keep my eye (ear?) on it and see if the gremlins come back...

btw it's a simple and quick build using a Superlite II PCB, with just the addition of an IRF820 source follower before the tone stack:

Wow! Magnetic vibration from the PT itself, or acoustic vibration from the speaker?

Directly from the PT itself, I'm pretty sure.

The amp was sitting right on top of the speaker cab, so I could be crazy, I guess

Now you have me questioning everything I thought I knew!!! How could you be so cruel? 8)

Woah! That's happened to me before, actually.

I got a little 2 tube phono preamp about 4 years ago. First time powering it up, the little PT rattled and buzzed all scary like! Its bells are crimped onto the laminations, and when I gave it a little squeeze the noise went away. Unplugged it, and put a tiny bit of additional crimp/teeth in it with vice grips. (Very carefully and not at all like a caveman!)

Noise went away, and I've been enjoying it ever since. Could be a tiny little gap between the bell(s) and iron that are just perfect enough to resonate when powered up. I agree, very freaky and scary sound. I think it's just mechanical vibration, though.

I'd contact Edcor just to let them know about it now ...

That's a good idea.

I'll send them an e-mail, just in case the problem returns.
