Sound clip of my HRM.

Post by massygt6 »

It's a pretty standard 101HRM version, except for the voltages than are significantly lower that usual.
Cab is a 2x12 with Eminence Governor in it.
Aria pro II 335 replica, lawsuit era, don't know anything about pickups
SM57 at mid point of the cone.
No compression, no posteq, straight into Mackie soundcard.
Wait a few seconds and at the bottom of the page and the download will become available.
Thanks for your attention, any answer is precious to improve.

Sounds pretty good!

Can you tell us your amp settings used on this clip?

Thanks Structo...
Sure, the settings:

Volume: 8 (it's there all the time, clean and OD)
Deep on
Rock
Mid Boost off
Pab off
Treble 12 o'clock
Mid 10 o'clock
Bass 10 o'clock

Drive 11 o'clock and Od trimmer at 12 o'clock
Level 8:45 o'clock (pretty low, I'm in a appartment)
Presence 9 o'clock

One little thing when I listened again.

Are you happy with the way it sounds on the bass notes?

On the recording it seems to get a bit undefined on the lower notes.

I know sometimes the recording doesn't do the amp justice.

Just curious as I have had this problem before on my D clone.

Well, it's a bit loose on the low end, and only with PAB off and with the bass pot above 10 o'clock...but it's loose in a good way to my ears...also, the guitar I've used sounds very mellow on the lowend, maybe it has alnico II pickups.
Another thing that I've noticed is that at low volumes the low end is a bit blurry, I think it'a speaker issue, and the recording is done at low volumes, I'm in a appartment and I have to keep volumes low.
With PAB switched on, the lowend it's tight and solid...
Have you lowered the bass cap or the cathode bypass caps?

Massy: I love your HRM sound, I have to agree it's a bit loose on the low end for a HRM, but anyway I love it.
Maybe the lower voltages have something to do with it?

I wired my bass pot with a .001uf cap and also I jumper the two right hand lugs of the bass pot to the PAB relay so when PAB is not engaged the two lugs are connected. I have two wires from the lugs to the PAB normally closed relay switch.
Then when PAB is switched on, the jumper is switched off, making the bass a bit tighter in PAB.

Also the mid cap can play a big role.
Use a 250K mid pot and then the cap that sounds best with a single coil is the .05uf and .01uf for humbuckers.

Some wire a switch to that so they can switch that on the fly.

Do you have a bright cap on the master?

Also some like a 330pf for the treble cap, I tried that and didn't like it and went back to 270pf.

Speakers play a very important role as you probably know, I recently bought a EVM 12L Classic and really like it.

I have it paired with a WGS CL80 but will probably get another 12L down the road.

I would like to try a Delta Pro but those only come in 8 ohms so I can't use that with my 16 ohm 12L.

Thanks Erwin, I'd say that the guitar I've used plays the big part...with the PRS, the low end is pretty solid even with PAB OFF.
For sure the lower voltages leads to a softer and creamier sound...

That's a clever approach, very well done...
I've got 250k mid pot and 330pf treble cap, I like this combination, 0,01 for the mid cap, and the curious thing is that is good with humbuckers and good with singles.
Maybe I should try a 0,047 instead of the 0,1 for the bass, as I've said before, I've got too much bass and I have to keep the pot really low.
No bright cap on the clean master, but a switchable bright cap on the OD level, I found it useful with really dark guitars to give a little "sizzle" in the top end and make the OD a bit more aggressive.
Another curious thing is that the amp sounds great with v30, almost "marshallesque" OD tone, with a Les Paul or the PRS, trimming down some mids on the HRM board (PAB ON), the amp really starts to sound modern and tight.
On the other side the clean is not so great as a "regular high voltage version", it's a thick dark clean that translates into a great OD channel.
