Onboard dumbleator - power supply from precision PS ?

Post by pedro »

Hi

I'd like to add an onboard d-lator to my latest 50watt 102 build but dont really wan to run any external effects in the loop ( already have a good set up at the front end of the chain ) - I just want to have the extra tube in the path for all of its perceived effects on the tone of the amp.

I have a spare tube socket and heater supplies already sitting there in my chassis - so wondered if its possible to take the HT from the existing supply so long as I use dropping string and additional filtering to isolate the stage from the other preamp stages ?

Anyone done a similar thing ?

cheers

Just come off your screen side of your choke with a couple of dropping resistors and 33uf 450 to 500V caps. All of my amps are built lile this and it works great.

You might have to tweak the overall string a little. But I start with 47K and 100K and with a 450V starting point, I get what I need.

Hi all,

wired up the onboard d-lator - but as this is a donor chassis from an old tube PA amp its pretty big and the cable runs to the send and return are pretty long.

Anyhow, despite working OK there is too much noise added withe d-lator onboard - I think because of some proximity of the D-lator tube to other signal runs and heaters. so I have reverted to original set up and removed it for now.

I will build up the d-lator in its own rack unit and go again.

Back to original spec the noise floor is really really low - so all is good.

Actually I even tried DC heaters to the preamp tubes to see if it helped but surprisingly DC heaters was noisier than back to AC which is smooth as a baby's backside !

cheers all
Pete
