Sizzled My Tranny

Post by Decko »

Turned my JMP 50 on this morning. Warmed up for about 5 minutes then it blipped and lost sound. I immediately shot down power. I looked behind the head cabinet but i did not see any smoke...just a sizzling sound coming from the power tranny. It sizzled for about a minute. The amp is from 1976. Could this be a result of worn out power capacitors????

Please advise...

Those marshalls go thru power caps like every 5 years. Probably a shorted can cap. Change them all out. JJ's or F&T's are good.

Wow that can't be good!

I wonder what caused the sizzling sound after the power was off?

The oils in the tranny or something?

Sounds like an expensive fix.

It seems everyday I read about somebody having trouble with Marshall amp, especially the newer ones.
Sounds like Marshall doesn't go over spec on any part to keep the cost down and these types of failures are the result. :?

Don't let that smoke out!

I have experienced a few Sizzling trannys. Most have been ok once the short was fixed. Which is usually a power supply cap. You should test the Tranny before you put it back into operation. Light bulb limiter and or Variac would be useful. And check your Fuse, make certain it is the right amperage.

Thanks all for the feedback. I have not had a chance to dissect the amp, probably this weekend. I suspect it is bad caps. The amp is 33 years old!
