Real Tube 901 Tube Driver Ground Question

Post by resophonic1 »

I recently bought a Real Tube 901 Tube Driver, it's the black version with the added mid control. I really like it but I noticed it has an unusually high ground hum compared to my friends original Tube Driver. His has a two pronged plug and mine arrived with a three pronged plug. Suspecting a grounding issue I opened it up and disconnected the earth ground from the 3 pronged plug connected to the output jack. That cured the hum and it is extremely quiet and functioning fine. I have not been able to contact the original owner to see if the 3 prong plug was added later. I have the following questions:

Can I tape up the ground wire and tuck it away neatly?

If I leave it disconnected is their a shock hazzard?

I need your advice thanks for the help!

Update....I scanned Ebay and found some pics. Some have the three prong plug and some don't.

the third wire is a safety but its function depends on the local code
and the age of the system its pluged into..... a customer of mine
called me once to say that his amp was throwing shocks while it was turnd off
i told him to get an electrician.... his house was not grounded... he did
and was no longer shocked.... Ive been nailed in the mouth too many times
through the mic because of bad grounding and old wireing.....
re connect the ground..... get one of those old three prong adapters if you
value silent opperation over your own safety... please keep in mind that
you can set up the conditions for electrocution lifting the ground ......
if you set up your gear at a venue which has faulty wireing it could bite you bad

Andy,

I took your advice! I resolder the earth ground and bought a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter to left the ground for silent operation when I'm at home.
