When you buy a set of balanced tubes, what exactly are they balancing?
What do numbers like "34" or "41" written on the boxes actually mean?
Are higher or lower numbers better or doesn't it matter?

Re: A For Dummies Question
For output tubes the more common term is "matched." This means that at some operating point (Va, Vg2, Vg1, Vf), the plate current and the transconductance (Gm, change in plate current per volt of Vg1) are the same, within some tolerance, of course. The numbers on the boxes are the current and Gm for the seller's test setup.
