Preamp build reflection

Post by wahmi »

hi
How far can I take inspiration from pedal diagrams to design or modify a tube preamp. I'm looking for readings on this. For example, we can take inspiration from the diagram of the TS 808 to design a tube drive channel on an amp (with a 12ax7)

In my understanding of things, very little.

The tube side gives a specific kind of gain/drive/compression that most of the others are trying to emulate as best they can, they have to add a lot of other extra components to get the gain that the tube gain stage does easily and well.

If you want a tube to sound like a transistor, on the other hand, that may be very hard... you'd need to pass the signal through a transistor to get that tone, which somewhat defeats the purpose...

I might be misunderstanding the question.

You need to get out of generality world, and state specific’s in terms of what you are looking for/ going after, because both SS and tubes can cover a lot of each other’s ground in may ways until you start to drive each one hard, or run a tube at low voltages.
Such powering’s with a tube will narrow its frequency response and such does not really happen with a Transistor or IC chip.
Also when a tube is driven hard and clips in a general way the harmonic content that extends above the root note being played is more pleasing to the ear then the harmonic content that a SS device will provide,

Thanks.

so I can keep what I know of a pedal circuit just for the following things:

everything in front of IC :
-pulldown
-coupling
-high and low pass.

If your question is: "do the same laws for frequency shaping with R & C components apply to tubes and transistors or ICs?" I think the answer is "yes", but remember to scale values with the impedance.
