Looking for supplies for my own amp build

Post by paintballnsk »

Hello,

I'm looking to custom build a 50w head.
Would anyone please share some suggestions for amp parts? I'm looking for a power transformer that can has 12v out as well as 6.3. I'm also looking for a custom chassis that would handle 5 pre tubes, 2 power tubes, and a headshell to go with it.

Thanks,
Nick

That's a pretty broad question with many answers.

For most board level components like capacitors, resistors, transformers, tube sockets, there are many vendors that can fulfill those needs. Some of that depends on your geographic location. If you're in the US or EU or elsewhere, etc.

In the US, I've used AES (tubesandmore.com) for most of these components, but occasionally I'll also use mouser.com or digikey.com as well.
As for chassis, that really depends on the exact amp you're building and the exacting nature of what you want out of it. Mojotone.com has many kits/chassis etc that replicate known amps, but I don't know much about them as I've never bought or built one.

There are many other vendors that sell specific kits of amps and parts etc.

What level do you want to engage in? Do you want a blank chassis to specific sizes? Do you want a chassis for amp X set to specific details?

There are literally dozens of options all based heavily on what you want to build...

Also there may be 0 options for some specific builds... thus why the question can't easily be answered.

Why are you calling for a need for 12 volt filaments?

Due to the lack of information I could guess that's for relays, but not sure.

Rather than getting a single PT with the taps you require, it might be easier to get one with a 6v filament, then find a 12v filament transformer to add on. Might spare some heartache/headache.

If you plan on using the 12V supply for the Heaters, you could forgo the 6.3V winding and wire the two output tube heaters in series. If you planned on using the 12V secondary for switching, or other solid state circuitry, you could install a secondary small switching supply for very short money, thereby saving some added size to you transformer and space inside your chassis for the linear filter supply. But, we want what we want, and if you want both LV secondaries, you can check out the stock here:

I use Mouser whenever possible for most components. I have also used Arrow and DigiKey. I also like AmplifiedParts for some parts; they might have a chassis to meet your needs. For chassis I have had good luck dealing with the folks in the For Sale/Trade section of this site. If you are looking for a Fender or Marshall chassis, Ebay is usually a good place to look. Occasionally you can find chassis or build kits on Reverb.com.

As others have said, it would help to know more about your wants/needs/plans.
