the return of the HRM (clean clip added)

Post by mat »

I wouldn't have ever believed that moving few wires + changing one tube socket could make that big of difference on the amp

My HRM build has been lacking a good beefy tone for too long. The day before yesterday I changed the V1 tube socket and rerouted shielded wires going to masters and OD pot. This was after reading novosibir's comment of not to put THE wires too close to the tone section wires. Mine did go inside of the tone section wires   I think this is REALLY important to anyone to try if suffering harshness, lack of od, hard playing amp, lack of sustain.

I must say BIG THANKS novosibir :D 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Here is a quick clip with a pair of KT77's. I'll will also try 6L6's asap.

Od master was less than 9:00. Really better sound if turning to 10-11:00

First time the amp is really joy to play :D I can really dig in with pick without the amp starting to bark. Time to make some music :D :D

+1 - I like it .....

got me wonering .... I've used coax shielded to run from the tone section of the board to the pots on front panel - keeping as far away from rest of board as possible , but I have pretty long runs because Ive built my prototype in an old PA chassis - I wonder if this will have any detrimental effect on the tone - high end loss for example ?

Depends on the lenght and on the quality of the shielded wires.

Keep in mind, that electrically regarded every shielded cabel may be regarded as a small cap from the wire to ground - shunting high frequencies.

With a RG174 or similar w/ a capacitance of about 30p/ft. you might be fine, but with usual shielded LF audio cables w/ a capacitance of 100p/ft. or more you'd have a tone sucker.

Larry,
I'll measure the capacitance of a foot of it and report back !

cheers
Pete

In fact - I just did ( sudden motivation ! ) and its 40 pf/ft. So maybe OK.

For anyone in UK / Europe - Its Van Damme 268-001-000 SPOFC foil and shield pair.

If you don't like the thick and stiff RG58, Dumble has used in his amps, then I'd highly recommend to use the RG174 antenna coax! It's about only 30p/ft. - what's the same as with the RG58, but the thickness of the RG174 is even less than 1/8" - and it's flexible.

Best of all is the Belden brand, what you may get at Newark (Farnell in Germany).

Anyone know where I can buy less than 100ft?
I've been using george L cable and it seems to work ok. It's a little thick though.
