Are these transformers ok to use?

Post by Seiche »

For my first amp project, a vibro champ variant, I ordered some mojotone transformers (made by heyboer afaik?).

They look a bit dirty/crusty cosmetically (especially that PT). Are these ok to use, or should I return them?

Those are fine if a touch ugly. Cosmetically sloppy varnish. Google "transformer varnish" if you are curious.

Heyboer produces great transformers. I just got some, in fact. Their attention to aesthetics, however, leaves something to be desired. I get it...some people don't care, others do. I personally wish they put in the extra 10% it'd take to keep scratches off the end bells and provide a better finish detail. People bitch about the premium Mercury charges, but they provide very high quality finish work.

yeah ok, so I came here essentially to calibrate my expectations. Sounds like this is normal. They are brand new and look a bit used lol. But as long as they work, fine.

I'm not expecting to build a work of art outright.

Yup I like mine dirty, rusty and crusty!

Yeah Edcor and Mercury really come out looking ready to mount on stereo open chassis display while other seem to look like an old Fender transformer all crusty.
They all work very well.
