Another SSS inspired build

Post by Synchu »

This has been built quite a few months ago. I spent some time in tweaking it and trying to capture the sound nirvana flowing of the speakers in the room.
I think, I managed to some extent at last.

Else - not much to share, besides the big thanks to mhartman for his layout (couple of minor some glitches only - already posted in other threads - it is still amazing to me with this rather complicated design!!) and to all other ampgarage.com members that shared significant bits of information around this.

Niki

Tubes complement

- 5 x 12AX7 - preamp tubes, 1 is used for the two gain stages, 2 for reverb send/return, 1 phase inverter and 1 cathode follower. I used a mix of various brands that sound best to me.

- 1 x 12AT7 - used as reverb driver

- 4 x 6L6WGC - TAD - TAD tubes seem to sound very good with this amp. I tried my trusty long time favorites - Russian NOS 6P3S-EV, some NOS Phillips 6L6GC and JJs, but TADs beat them all. Only time will tell what would be their durability, but out of my long experience with this brand, they seem to hold well over time.

Absolutely gorgeous (in build and sound). Nice work! Now, I'm thinking about building myself another one of these.

BTW, Let me know about the glitches and I'll get the layout updated.

Thanks for the good words to all. Appreciated.
The interesting bit in this recording is that the amp is in Jazz mode, which I generally not use at all in all my Dumble styles. What a surprise with this one. :)

I am very happy with the Edcors. They are prohibitively expensive here in EU, but I had to otrder couple of sets for a hi-fi build and used the opportunity to sneak this set in the order :) Got a package of 20 kg solid iron overall ...
BTW, Let me know about the glitches and I'll get the layout updated.
V3 reverb driver cathode bypass cap is not connected and 4.7M resistor should go from the 10k to the 0.047uF :)

Cool. Thanks - I'll get it updated so future builders don't run into problems.

Thanks for the good words :)

Nothing seriously wrong with the layout for a person with some experience in building amps - (I wouldn't recommend this to a starting builder anyway - with or without a layout :) ).
Definitely worth updating it though - it is just too good and deserves it :)

It will obviously take a bit more time than planned to do some more samples, but here's a short one, I did just before going on a (short) family vacation.

The lead is King of Tone overdrive (the high gain version). If you ask my ears, they are rather happy on how the amp takes drive pedals.

https://soundcloud.com/synchu/gsr-jazz- ... boggy-back

I played maybe 5 more drive pedals out of the big bunch I have around and it seems that fatter (read tad darker) ones, such as Mad Professor Sweet Honey, G2D Creatmtone, are a bit better sounding - to me at least.

I happened to need some samples of this one recorded some weeks ago and haven't played it for a while.
Turned it on and didn't look at the other part of the herd since then.

Amazing amp and records so nice (IMO):

Anyone thinking about building it - do it, do it :)

Now I am thinking whether a 4x or even 2x 6V6 version of it can be done that will sound credible. This will most probably be my next winter project.

Niki

EDIT: Never been quite happy with how bass guitar comes out in this recordings. Will need to build me a decent small bass amp for recording - Ampeg B15 seems to be the go to standard in the industry. Nevertheless, got some recording gurus pour a bit of wisdom on me and did an alternative bass guitar record
