My first ODS #183 build

Post by evirob »

So after literally years of poring over videos, schematics, photos and discussions online, and slowly collecting parts, I've finally finished my #183 ODS build. Boy, what a relief.

I deviated from the circuit slightly in that I used the 6V6 output section from ax84.com (I don't need 100W) and also in that various component values are slightly different, simply due to what I had available.

I deviated quite a lot from the layout as you can see from the photos, mostly because I built it on generic tag boards. I also re-designed the power supply for the 6V6's and a slightly lower B+ (320V) and I left out the FET input because from what I could tell, I wouldn't use it. My layout ended up a bit of a rat's nest, but the amp is quiet enough (hum wise) even at high volumes, so I don't feel the need to tidy it up.

I built it into a combo, mostly because I wanted to have a shot at building a speaker cab too. For the cab, again I borrowed from ax84, although their plans are for a 1x12 extension so I modified it slightly to fit my chassis. Cosmetically its a mixture of various Dumbles I saw online.

I used an Eminence Wizard which is a very efficient speaker. With the 6V6's you get a lot of bang for your buck.

My initial thoughts on playing the amp - and it goes without saying I have no experience of a real Dumble - is that although the overdrive is the main event, the clean sound is something of a revelation itself. I don't think I've ever played another amp that I liked clean with a bridge humbucker. Very sweet and rich.

Anyway, I'm very pleased with how it all turned out. I will post some sound clips when I have time to record, if anyone is interested.

Just about everything I know on the topic, I have learned either from this forum, ax84 and valvewizard, but a fair bit of problem solving went in to this amp too, and I'm happy to answer questions if it helps anyone.

Some photos - sorry for crappy phone pics.

Thanks for posting the pictures and giving us your observations.

The green worked out well.

Nice work!

Nice work! I'm looking forward to build an amp with the same configuration as you did ( thinking of the 6v6 PA section). I would love to hear it sing :D
Sometimes you can learn a lot by not trying to listen anything

Thanks Mark, yes I like the green. To be honest, when I ordered the material online the image was a bit misleading (I thought it would be more turquoise) but as it turns out I'm happy with it.

edhana - sure thing. I'll record some when I can. I've not had much opportunity to crank it yet, but the 6V6 PA seems to work well overall with the circuit.

Very nice. Now there you have 1 less Dumble type amp to build :)

You're right... I thought I'd be satisfied... But still what collection is complete without a SSS? :D
