5F2A power transformer

Post by stuben »

Does anyone make a PT for this amp with the correct high voltage winding as found in the original tweed Princeton? There are several kits and replacements out there, but I can't find one with the correct high voltage winding. I bought an Allen Champ kit a long time ago and that has 310V center tapped which is way high.

The amp sounds real good, but probably nothing like an original. I get a B+ of 375V with a 5Y3, which is about 50 volts too high. Also I discovered that when turning the amp on that the 5Y3 does not have a slow start up like a 5AR4. The B+ shoots way up to around 475V stressing the 450V filter caps.

I know I could use a reverse polarity Zener in series with the center tap, But would rather have the correct PT. The one that is in there is for a Deluxe, and would like to use it to build one of those.

Thanks!

There's a Mercury Magnetics offering that's spec'd at 260-0-260, but I found it so underpowered (Tone really suffered too) for a 6V6 that I ended up pulling it and using it in a high gain SE EL84 amp, where the plate voltage is optimal. If you're interested, the model # is FTCP-6. And FWIW, the modern Sovtek 5Y3 has a slow startup. It also drops less voltage than an old stock 5Y3.

You might look at Musical Power Supplies PT275.2.

Seriously, for this sort of lower powered item, I often troll eBay for used power transformers. I wouldn't go above $25 or $30 including shipping. There are bargains to be had. You might even get a Stancor or the like.

Well since the amp is class A you do not need a recto tube and in that light a replacement PT for a Fender Pro jr will give you 330 volts after the SS rectos and the 68 ma rating will provide the punch!
I think they go for 50 bucks from AES!

The only concern is will be that the leads come fitted with spade connections on the end and the lead length is set for the needs of the Pro Jr!

I have built several 5E3's using the Mercury low voltage power transformer and like them a lot. Compared them to a '56 Deluxe i had and each time it was a better sound. The Ruby 5Y3 will drop the same 50 volts as a NOS and is my choice for that tube.
