Better Late Than Never

Post by Blackburn »

Finally did a Tweedle D that came out of an older build that I stripped. It was a basic 5E3 with some mods and I figured I'd have some fun and do one. Hope you dig! :)

Looks nice how do you like the sound of this amp?

I have a love/hate relationship with mine. Sometimes it sounds great other times it seems to break up too early with HB guitars.

Thanks Mark. I can pretty much echo what you said about this thing and have the same feelings with this one and stock 5E3s. I've simply opted not to use my LP with 'em. Singles are another story. I may get to a recording of this one with a Mustang. Sounds really nice and has a shit ton of headroom even half way up on the dial. The low end is nice and tight, it's really chimey and the highs aren't too shrill on the Normal channel. Can't say the same for my LP. :(

You can try a 12AY7 in the front end.

Thanks for the tip, Charlie. I may just try that and have a go with my LP. I need to check if Ruby makes one.

Looks great.
I have EH 12AY7 in one of my other amps. Sounds excellent.
I find that EH lately suite my taste more than any other brand. I have a pair of 6CA7 in a K60 build that sound better than everything else I tried, including few NOS sets of 6L6s and EL34s.

Thanks Niki. I don't normally think of EH first because of issues I've had myself and similar stories I've heard from others. This only deals with their output tubes, though. I figure a well tested EH pre tube from TD should be safe enough. Might just give that a try. Thanks for the tip! :)
