SSS - Which One to Build?

Post by MarshallPlexi »

Hey guys! I've been looking to build a SSS for years now and my schedule at work has finally opened up so I have the time to now. I've been reading on this forum for about 8 hours today and studying the various schematics for the SSS amps and while I see a lot of updates on the 001 and 002 serial numbers, I'm curious, what are the tonal differences between them?

I'm a huge John Mayer fan so for that reason alone I'm leaning towards the SN: 002 build (if I understand correctly, 002 is his?)

Is there a verified schematic for 002? I won't be using the stock layout that most guys are using and will be trying to "roll my own" board for this one. Hence the request for the schem and not the layout. Basically I'm just looking for a known quantity to start from so I'll know if it doesn't work it's not the schem, it's me! :)

Thanks so much for any help you can give! I really do appreciate it!

SSS02 is the only schematic that was generated by someone who had his hands inside an actual SSS. There are some problems with the hand-drawn schematic, but the source is the real deal. I would shoot for SSS02 and read EVERYTHING that you can here to learn from other's SSS builds.

My understanding is that this is the current "state-of-the-art" for the Mayer Sig:

Resist looking at the layout if you must!! :lol:

Good luck,

@MarshallPlexi:

you can go with the 002 schematic.

The Volume pot is 1M, not 100k (measures 100k with the Rock/Jazz switch engaged, that is where the mistake comes from).

IMHO the ground tail resistor on V1b should be 100Ohms, not 1k, but I have not tried the 1k.

You can use mhartmans Layout and get close to 002 (he used a mix of the JM sig and the 002 schematic).

I used the 002 schematic with a twist and went for a Dlator as opposed to the Reverb.
