Hiwatt 50 Hy jinks

Post by Stevem »

A while back I had been bringing back to life a guys 1979 Hiwatt 50 and also had on hand for one of my own amps a set of new JJ 6V6 outputs.
Here are the wattage output results from resetting the amps bias for the JJs and testing the amps RMS power into a resistive load.

Speaker ohms Imp switch RMS power
16 16 19
8 16 8.8
16 8 29 3
8 8 18.9
In the first and the third test the amp still souinded tight, full and punchy, in the second test the high end and low end where rolled off a good bit and it responded to the loose side.
The tubes held up just fine to the 518 plus volts on there plates for many hours and in a latter test session still tested like they did before I placed them in the amp.
This type of power reduction sounded far better to all that heard and played thru the amp then any resistive load box we tryed on the amp other than the type that used inductance as part of its loading factor.
