Transformers for D'Lite 22 - 6V6 only?

Post by lord preset »

I just finished a D'lite 44 build and have been contemplating building a low watt D or TW style amp for my brother as a second project. I was thinking of ~5 watts or less because he is a bedroom player but I have been getting cold feet about the whole thing as a) I've never played a 5 watt amp that I actually liked and b) he just tried my D'lite 44 and said it was the best amp he has ever played.

So now I am leaning towards a D'lite 22, but I want it to be as light, small, and cheap as is practical. The original D'lites speced a PT and OT ready for 6L6 operation at 33 watts. Assuming I was only planning on supporting 6V6 operation could I just use a Deluxe Reverb PT/OT set? The voltages seem consistent with the Brown Note specs but the secondary 330-0-330 tap puts out 120ma vs 300ma for the BN PT.

Something like these:

Thoughts? Thx

Not exactly, the original d'lite was based around Vibrolux iron and 6v6's, with the first transformers rated at only 200mA IIRC. Allen Amplification makes a small Champ style chassis and also has an oversized Champ footprint PT that would support a pair of 6V6's.

As far as "cheap"...what exactly is cheap? if you have to spend time asking questions, doing research, chasing down parts, fabricating a chassis are you really saving any money? Ceriatone makes the Lunchbox kit that is relatively inexpensive if you go the barebones route.

Yes, cheap is relative, but my time is worthless

I did enjoy the D'lite 44 build and don't mind the effort. Chasing parts was an adventure and I found a local electronics surplus store with all manner of cheap NOS stuff that could be used for part of the build. I know more than when I started so I won't be ordering as many wrong parts from Mouser, so I'll save money right there. As for a chassis I'll probably get a blank one from DDawg. Punching holes in aluminum would have to be easier than it was in the heaver steel chassis I used for the 44.

I realize that the $ difference in Deluxe vs Vibrolux iron is minimal, but smaller and lighter would still be good if it works.
