The tubes are the JJ KT77 vs the Sino EL34B. I run the amp thru a Rivera Rockcrusher, so they might sound different if I was really pushing air. But I'm not in a spot where I can blow the roof off!
Both sets were biased at 70%, and the controls on the amp were the same with all knobs at 12:00 except for the presence, which was set at 9:00.
I modded my bright switch for 370 pf, which is a little less compressed and greasy in feel and tone. The Express is a bright amp, so a little brightness off' the top is welcome IMO.
My observation is the the KT77 is just slightly fatter in sound and less compressed in feel.
I never would've guessed that. I've only heard the JJ 6CA7s in a plexi, and they sound great there. Little bigger bottom. One of them red plated and ate it immediately but tubedpot sent another one with minimal questions asked, fwiw
I thought the first clip had a little more clarity in the clean part, compared to the second clip. But the second clip sounded good on the cranked part compared to the first clip.
I prefer the KT77s, but neither get clean/chimey enough IMO. That's a hard song to pulloff since it is done with one guitar in open G tuning and another in standard. It's always a compromise, although I enjoy playing it. Nice...
I am a fan of the JJ/KT77, but I'm actually more interested in the speaker(s?) used, the mic, and how you combined the guitar sound with the drums and bass.
I also have to point out that BG is big on the Peso coin for a pic, ...so when I hear someone doing him I listen pretty hard for that sound. And I don't hear it, of course. Man, there are so many elements to a great recorded guitar sound.. I f'n hate this sometimes. But it's a fun clip to hear, thanks for posting it.
