JJ Low ESR Axials - Express Build Maybe?

Post by ToneMerc »

I've never tried the JJ axials before, but I'm thinking about trying them in the Express cap bank. Any thoughts or experience with them?

Link for those who haven't seen them? How low is low ESR?

Lower ESR caps can handle larger transients without breaking a sweat meaning less supply sag. They can also handle larger ripple currents when filtering because of the lower I^2R losses (less self heating = longer cap life). The ESR doesn't really effect the sound but the feel of the amp might be very quick if we're talking fractions of an Ohm where the amp design expects a few Ohms (more typical of high voltage e-caps). Whether this helps or hurts in an Express I don't know but I would tend towards hurt as the Express is a fickle beast.

Still worth a shot though, they could be great!

Cliff
They have been around for a few years but it appears that not too many vendors sell them. I like the physical size and the price is attractive but the lower max temp range concerns me slightly though. If I decide to move on them, I most likey will grab them from AES. I also have some 22uf & 33uf 450V RIFA PEG 124's on hand that I can use as well.

the peg124s are so much better it's not even a fair race.

Pay attention to the max current they can handle! This is referring to how much RMS AC ripple current they can swallow after the rectifier. 30uF can only handle 100mA..

to be fair there is a temperature coefficient so at 40c they can do twice as much current but that is still so so bad.
