I use Fred's but not all the time. It depends on the the amp I want to use them in. For amps 50 watts and above I use them to soften up the top end like a rectifier tube but without the sag. To me they are more musical then standard diodes. Are they always necessary......No I build trainwrecks and others w/o freds and they sound and respond just fine. Think of use them as a fine tuning trick and use them when you feel they are needed. Try them out so you can hear and feel the difference next to standard diodes.

I'm going to try them. There's the UF5408 that Larry uses (http://www.larryamps.de), and his builds look killer! They're a little overkill, but I like the coolness, and easy handling factor of their size.

I have a bunch of 4007's if I don't like them.
