Turret-style layout?

Post by greiswig »

I'm just wondering...for tweaking, it seems like a turret board is easier to work with in some ways than the eyelet board with dedicated spots for each component.

How much of the magic of the Dumble sound comes from the actual layout of the parts on the board, and is there a turret-style layout that you've found works well with a Dumble amp?

I like turrets also for that reason, easier for me to tweak. My D'lite is turrets and sounds dumbly. I'm currently building a #183 clone using turrets.
I also like the fact that I can wrap the wires nice and tight around the bottom part of the turret. If only 1 component is used in the turret hole I also make sure the hole is stuffed tight by jamming a cut lead fragment or two in there.
I just use the same layout replacing eyelets with turrets.

Are you looking to tweak the circuit or tweak component values?

I've often thought that a hybrid board is the way to go - eyelets for the components that don't get tweaked, turrets for the ones that do.

Hmmm... mostly tweaking components, I suppose, but in the end that is also tweaking the circuit. The only major circuit modifications I find myself doing are things like odd PAB implementations, or partially bypassing the 220k resistor before the OD trimmer and putting that on a switch.

So I guess this is partly about the learning experience: I like experimenting with different things and seeing what is the effect on the tone.

Chip, do you have a layout that you put together that seems to work?

This is the one I used. I do use eyelets for the bypass caps and the PI tail resistors. Other than that I drill the turret holes in place of the eyelet layout. I then drill a small hole next to the turret which a wire is connected to, and feed the wire up though the hole to attach the wire.
