Relay Supply

Post by Structo »

I'm trying to decide how I am going to supply the relay voltage.
It seems most use a separate filament transformer ala #124 if their PT does not have a 5v tap.

Why can you not just tap off of the heater winding to the tubes and rectify that?
Is it too noisy or such?

Seems like an added expense that I could do without if I can use the heater voltage.

Tom
Here is some good advice ..(Other than the voltage doubler)Do it just like 124..

Can be noisy. If you use Hi Power Tweed Twin PT you'd have the 5V winnding.

Separate winding or transformer, much quieter, less dicking around overall..

Tom, I have a NOS Triad 115V/6.3V/600mA just like the one that I used in my "high voltage" build that I'll donate to the cause :D. It drops right into the CE chassis.

Thanks Tone Merc but I already ordered one from Mouser since I needed a few more parts.
Very generous offer.

I ordered this one. I hope it is OK.

Hmmm.. you better double check the current draw of the relays when activated. This xformer may be a tad small, only .15A

I'm going to use the Omron G5V-2-H-DC12 which draw 30ma on the coil.

I plan on running three relays so that's 90ma.

Is that too close to the 150ma transformer capacity?

You should be ok using the Omron, some of the other models draw twice as much. One other thing to consider is that the max voltage on the G5V is 8 volts, so build accordingly. Personally, my favorite 5V relay setup is a 6.3V supply into a FW bridge with a 7806 regulator.

FYI, future Triad reference

F-13X: 6.3V/600mA
F-113X: 12V/150mA
F-313X: 12.6V/300mA, the fatman used these on early models

Yeah, I built my D'lite like you mentioned.

I'm not sure what you mean about this relay.
The Omron 653-G5V-2-H-DC12 relay is a high sensitivity 12v relay.

The coil draws 30ma, so for three relays I will have a 90ma load if all are on at the same time.

I figure the transformer I ordered will put out above 12v since it has a 115vac primary so that the 12v regulator can work well.
Probably don't even need a regulator but I'll use one just the same.

Don't forget about the current for the footswitch LEDs. Not a lot, but need to include it in your calculations.

Yeah, just making sure that you are using a DC12 and not a DC5

I've used 5v winding for my 70's from a Mojotone bassman/Super Reverb PT without any noise or hum (2 relays).

That Bassman PT is only for two power tubes or 50 watts and is rated at 250ma.

I'm building a 100 watt ODS amp so I need more amps.

The Fender Twin PT I am using does not have the 5v tap or else I would use that.
That is the way the Heyboer in my D'lite is, so I just used a doubler then regulated it at 8v and used 5v relays.
Been that way for over two years with no problems.
Deric turned me on to that setup and made some pcb's for me.
