Xicon XRL series caps
Xicon XRL series capacitors are listed as the cap of choice for power supplies on several Dumble style BOMs. I have seen the Xicons in many amps here. According to Mouser, the XRL series is at obsolescence and that a replacement has been identified as the Lelon brand. However, given the recent (and probably ongoing) rash of chinese garbage/counterfeit caps, I am leary to just blindly get behind the first replacement that comes along without some research.
I'm wondering if there is a consensus here about a suitable alternative with similar quality and performance characteristics as the XRLs. I was planning to use them for some upcoming amps but am now thinking otherwise due to end of life/limited availability.
Note from Mouser:
The Xicon series of Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are
obsolete. These products will be replaced by product from Lelon
Electronics Corporation. Most changes, if any, are cosmetic in
nature (sleeve color, sleeve text, etc.).
Once stock has been depleted, this part will no longer be
available. Mouser has added a suggested replacement for the
original item. It is recommended that the specifications on both
items be reviewed to assure the replacement part can be used in
the application.

Re: Xicon XRL series caps
I have been using the Lelans for a while now. As far as measured results the Lelan are virtually identical to the Xicon with respect to average value of capacitance, ESR and dissapation.
I suspect that Xicon spun off the e-cap division into Lelan, but that is just a guess. They appeared exactly at the same time as Xicon was announced as discontinued.
There are other options Nichicon, Panasonic, United Chemicon and on and on.

Hi Gary,
I was hoping you would comment; I was thinking specifically of you when I posted as you use(d) the Xicons in your nice amps. Ok, good to know about the Lelans. That makes me feel better. I was spec'ing out the Xicons for some upcoming projects, making measurements for a board, and then when I looked them up, found out they were going obsolete, I was dismayed! Seems that always happens to me LOL; just when you find a good part, it goes out of production.
Thanks!
Dave

Glad this got posted. You beat me to the punch. I was not happy when I saw the Mouser note about these, but looks like all is well.Colossal wrote:Xicon XRL series capacitors are listed as the cap of choice for power supplies on several Dumble style BOMs. I have seen the Xicons in many amps here. FWIW,
This is an area where Digi-Key smokes Mouser. Digi-Key routinely sends discontinuance / obsolence notifications when it is part that you have ordered in quantity in the past.
Recently happened on my favorite panasonic disc ceramics.

Yes I think they were the X5F caps. I am testing a few other of the panasonics to see how they perform.
ND9xxx was the part series as I remember.

Re: Xicon XRL series caps
I have a project list at Mouser of the parts I will be needing for my 100w ODS build.
It seems everytime I visit Mouser there is a part on the list that is either out of stock now or going obsolete.
What will probably happen as before is I will have to source my parts from several vendors and eat the shipping costs.
