What makes this sound?

Post by LPSGME »

talbany's recent Beck emulation post reminded me of a Laney demo clip I always found interesting, particularly for the intermodulation/rupture of the sound at the close of some of the notes.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what does that, or how to do it?

Mouse over the lower middle amp panel where the info scroll bar is and select Track #3.

Some of those sounds can be made by "triggering" the whammy bar or flicking it. Other splatty sounds are generated by picking and the gain of the amp, I would assume.

Sorry for OT remark

The drum sounds on track 3 are not bad either. Check out the kick drum sound........ ...I've been tying to get that sound out of my old Ludwig for 5 years with all kinds of mics and compressors and Eqing.

You push the whammy bar down, and quickly pull your hand off it, so it springs back by itself.

Very David Gilmour-esque.

it sounds like a 24" or 26" x 22" kick with a pillow of foam strip hard beater head.

it's not a hard kick sound to get!
use mic placement and subtractive eq not boosting!

use two mics one on the inside of the drum to capture the beater and pump and another on the outside of the beater head to fill in the snap and air. align for phase shifts to taste.

compress 4:1 - 8:1 depending on dynamics.

personal fav mics.

inside: AKG D12e, Shure Beta52, Beyer M88, Shure SM88 (as long as the drummer isnt a monster this mic is awesome!!!) SM91, D112.

outside: Neumann U47fet, Beyer M88

route a little to the Overhead reverb to glue it in the mix

Other easy way!!! for all you protools mix in the box guys sound replacer

Now you have me wondering what drums would sound like re-amped through a Dumble - for a Drumble sound?

No problem :). The trick is to get that beater attack from mic placement so get just the littlest bit of Chain movement then compress for that solid pump and click. My guess is when you are mixing you solo it up and get a really nice kick sound then when the drums are put in the mix those suddly bits or character are lost. If you mix just a bit extreme they seem to be just right after everything else is unmuted.

Just becareful of sub harmonics and low mid mudd some speakers can't reproduce.
