any experience with 6ca7 EH tubes

Post by zimm »

Just picked up a musicman hd130, thinking about using the tranny's in a nonhrm. In the meantime I was gonna pick up some tubes to see what it sounds like. Its got three fat bottle sylvania's in it, which I was told are "good". Figure Ill pick up a set of tubes but Im trying to keep in mind my future plan of the converting the amp. Anyone try the EH 6ca7's in the ODS circuit? I was thinking of trying them, or finding a single or pair sylvania 6ca7 pulls and hope the others are ok. Looks like I could get a quad of EH's for the cost of a pair of questionable pulls but dont want to waste cash if the EH's are dogs.

Those old fat bottle 6CA7s are arguably the best 6CA7s ever made. You would be better off to buy just a single used one just like them than a quad of anything in current production, then you could have a set for the nonhrm. They will sound fine in the Music Man ODS I think.

Assuming of course that the three you have are OK.

How is the flashing on them? How much is left? If they're bright and mostly all there that's good, if they are mostly gone and have a pinkish tinge around the edges of what's left, probably not. I have some old RCA blackplate 6L6GCs that have partly worn out patches in the flashing, but no pink, and they measure and sound fine.

Flashing is all there, guy I picked it up from said it was working a while ago but he somehow lost the fourth tube. Voltages checked out and I did not find any noticeable shorts so I have my fingers crossed as far as the rest of the amp. My gut feeling was that I should try to pick up a single pull and hope for the best. Even single used 6ca7's are going for quite a bit of change on fleabay  . If I completely re-tube I may go the 5881 route or some 6l6 variant anyway. I read mixed reviews as far as the EH 6ca7 tubes, just was wondering if anyone here had an opinion.
