Overall Master Volume in Effects Loop

Post by JammyDodger »

Hey All,

I would like to be able to set the volume balance between my overdrive and master channels, then be able to control the overall volume using another control. I was thinking that just a volume control between the preamp out and power amp in would do the trick. This could be either a passive (cut) or an active control.

Any thoughts???

Cheers, Mike

Not sure I follow.

What I do is usually set my pregain volume at around 12:00 then set the Master how overall loud I want it.
For loud playing this is set to around noon as well.

Then balance the Overdrive with the Level or Ratio depending on how your panel is labeled.

The overdrive also is affected by how much drive you have on it so I set that to the tone I want then adjust the OD volume.

Unless I am not getting what you are after, that method works pretty well.

If you don't have a Dumbleator or Kleinulator I would suggest you buy or build one as they really compliment these amps and offer another range of adjustment.
You can use the output pot to act as a overall master and can adjust the loop for more compression or drive.
Really adds a lot more versatility to an already good amp.

If you are a DIY type guy it really is a simple build to do.
If not Ceriatone just started selling theirs.

Yes, that's do-able. I use the Dumbleator but there's no reason that you can't use a simple volume pedal or control. There's a guy on ebay who sells a volume control for the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for just this purpose., I see no reason that it wouldn't work with a Dumble.

Yeah, I think that thing is just an L Pad type volume control.
I may have a schematic around here somewhere.

Yep, the Omnivox.

Hot Rod Deluxe Volume Box

This is the text I had with it.

Here you go. The pot is a 100k audio taper; input/output jacks are
normal 1/4" - all bought from Radio Shack. I used a plastic box also
bought from Radio Shack. If you use a metal box you don't need the
ground wire between the negative lugs on the jacks. I just used a
plastic box because it was cheaper and readily available. The in-stock
RS metal boxes are aluminum, more expensive, and bigger than the black
plastic box I got. The black plastic box is about as big as an MXR-size
pedal - plenty of room for two jacks, a pot, and wiring.

It's not pictured on the schematic, but you also need to use a jumper
wire (or bend the pot lug) to ground the lug on the right side of this
picture to solder it to the back of the pot. Let me know if this makes
sense or not. It's really easier than I'm making it sound. There's
also no added noise or anything - it works great for me.

I've used a 25k EBJr volume pedal in the serial loop of my Brown Note 22/33. Works like a charm if you want an overall volume control that you can control from a pedal.

Mike, I have used a loop volume control the same as Tom (Structo) has illustrated except installed an additional 100k in series w/ the wiper. I haven't used it (or needed to)on my 100W ODS, but worked well on other amps. fwiw, Tom O Conner also mentions it the TUT series.

L-Pads are used for attenuation of speaker output. The Omnivox volume box is just a master-volume-in-a-box that you stick in the effect loop.
