played today

Post by selloutrr »

its been a long time since i've had nothing to do i've been caught up on projects or at least as far as i can be, waiting on a part or piece to arrive. I took some well needed me time. pulled out an old Gibson RD artist bass, if i'm remembering right last 70's probably '79. I wanted one even before i saw nirvana play. but i've never had much time to adapt to playing it's 36" long scale, so it was pretty much just a case bass. I plugged it into an Ampeg SVT head and 8x10 cab. turned the volume to 5 on the normal ch. fiddled with the active Moog eq and HOLY !!!! that bass is awesome after about 15 minutes of introduction it was like butter every note was full and clear with just a little grawl on the top. the notes sustained as sweet as they were struck and despite the fatter neck it was still very comfortable to navigate.
i lost track of time and before i knew it two hours rolled by.

I miss playing!

There is nothing like a old SVT with a 8x10 cab. I had quit playing for about 15 years and about 2 years ago I set around with a friend of mine and that conversation has led to a jam in my basement every Sunday. It is so much fun to put the amps we build through their paces with a full on band. 3 guys in their 40s and 2 of us in our 50s. It is a lot of fun and I look forward to every sunday afternoon now. Make some time for yourself to play more if nothing else for your mental health

Extra-long scale has something to it. I've got a Dearmond Pilot bass, Korean clone of the 80's Guild, with a 35" scale. (Build and feel aren't far off from a Guild solid body guitar I had from about 86.) A bit more work to play, but I think there's something to it. Cleaner than a 34" but still bigger somehow.

Then again, I dig on short scale bass, too.

My mental health could use a good jam :)

Nothing like the SVT stack!
my old gig rig was and swr 220 pre out to a crown k2 power amp feeding an ampeg 8x10 and 2x15 with dual 15 band eq and time alignment. total weight.... 998lbs in ata cases. :(

it's a different experience playing this bass the fret spacing is just a bit wider taking me from a 7 fret reach to about 6 3/4 making me have to focus on my runs. but the 36" neck thru and string thru body and on boaurd moog compressor make for an amazing tone. it's very musical almost like a piano in sustain. nothing like my other basses but super heavy feels like two les pauls .
I grew up playing the typical fender P and J then moved to the musicman stingray. i gig a few times with a short scale musicman similiar to the mustang bass it was short scale had a really nasty cool tone and was lite as then come.
