I'm sort of caught like a deer in the headlights on this thread: While I am fairly certain there will be no useful resolution to the OP's needs, I can't seem to look away. Carry on.....

Completely agree. OP should go to the local shop and play amps, as suggested earlier.JazzGuitarGimp wrote:I'm sort of caught like a deer in the headlights on this thread: While I am fairly certain there will be no useful resolution to the OP's needs, I can't seem to look away. Carry on.....

Microcosm of TGP.
Re: poweramp-driven "liquid" distortion.
I don't know guys,
I was soooo disoriented you have no idea. All these DOZENS of crunchy amps, all these metal and guitarheroish heads, ALL sounding the same to me... 5 or 50 watt, clean or dirty, analog or digital, SS or tubes.
"traditional" forums nor reviewers/sites... really didn't answer my questions nor doubts. At all. You know, any amp does anything, with untold exceptions. Buying guides? I haven't even thought about a 100-watt amp but thanks for the suggestion. Stores? Yes, I see you need to get rid of this one.
This board did help me a lot.
Yeah, maybe in the end we didn't need to go any deep with the engineering stuff. But hell, I finally found someone that tells me WHAT's so special INSIDE that pedal (apart from the fact that he owns one) or why I shall avoid this or that amp design... See what I mean?
I needed this thread, here.
I needed building people.
I did NOT need a bunch of postcounts mocking me about Gilmour's personal rig, then telling me about their favourite brand no-matter-what, + a bunch of other people randomly reminding that "3 watts are enough for anything" - or whatever giant-killing-flavour-of-the-month will make them sound cool in the thread. And then the ones that suggest to change cabinet, guitar or reverb instead.
So... Yes, I'm going to try some amps. But I finally have a decent starting point...! At least I know the size of the beast I shall hunt... Until yesterday, I didn't even know whether it'd walk or fly.
...Maybe... I've discovered I'm just a Fender guy
and in theory one would not need to join a builders' community to discover this. But I did.
Thank you all a lot again

Re: poweramp-driven "liquid" distortion.
I would get a Vibrolux Reverb (original blackface)...and use a clean boost pedal..but that's just me...and I'm no authority on liquid amps....but I do know that if you run a significant clean boost in front of a smallish Fender combo, you will jizz in your rock star jeans.

Wow, 6 pages of absolutely nothing and it's in the technical discussion section. Promised myself that I would stay away from this disaster, but I couldn't stop myself from looking.
I am voting this "Most Useless Thread of the Month". If I was a mod, I would delete this completely and save other forum members from re-reading this garbage.
Go play some amps and quit talking about it. I am surprised anyone could learn to actually play a guitar with this "give it to me for free cause I'm to lazy to make an effort for myself mentality"

When I was a kid I bought what my idols used. It worked out fine.

The tweeds run lower voltages and will break up sooner. I love 'em - but I said that already.
Get a ZenDrive and a Deluxe Reverb.

Re: poweramp-driven "liquid" distortion.
Hendrix on AYE = Plexi Super Lead Marshall with KT66's and a Fuzz Face.
Early Gilmour (through DSOTM)= Hiwatt and a Fuzz Face. Some debate about whether DSOTM used Ge or Silicon transistors.
Later Gilmour = Fender BF preamp into a Hiwatt power section and a Big Muff.
Hendrix supposedly preferred higher voltage Marshalls, ~560, so his basic amp tone was definitely not into crunch territory, more like 'hair'.
It's hard to know when Hendrix had the fuzz on. When you roll back the guitar volume on a FF it can get pretty clean. Watch the Hendrix Like a Rolling Stone performance from the Monterey Pop festival. Watch when he switches the fuzz on a off.

Re: poweramp-driven "liquid" distortion.
Picking up on Lefty's comments - one of my favorite albums is "From the Cradle". Clapton used a variety of guitars there, but several featured a tweed twin and a 335. No pentodes there, but I think the sound of humbuckers driving a twin is pretty hard to beat.
Curious about "Frampton Comes Alive". That album (I'm sure there's a lot of overdubs there) has some of the best sounding tube distortion on the planet - power or preamp, I'm not sure. Anyone know his amplifier? I was thinking a tight JTM45 or loose JMP50. I think we all know the guitar.
Yep, this sounds more like garage talk....

Forums work like this: people who don't know stuff ask people who know stuff to share their knowledge with them.
A thread would always be useless to those who reply.
This thread has been very useful to me, I'm learning a lot of stuff which has nothing to do with playing the guitar.

The track I posted features a Gibson Archtop, I think it's an L-5, with a mini neck humbucker.
