I'm not sure what Dave Allen is calling his V-18 these days but it's still a super tweaked Princeton Reverb. The V-18 circuit will drop right into your Princeton except that the V-18 has a midrange control and there's no provision for it on a stock Princeton panel.Icetech wrote:well pewp, was hoping to weasel something cool into the old princeton chassis/iron... will have to get some bigger iron and go from there:)
Call Dave and ask him if he'll sell you a V-18 board with documentation. He used to sell the board as a standalone, it's in his best interest to sell it as part of a kit apparently.
The drawback to a Princeton is that it's a single channel amp. A lot of musicians like the Fender "normal" channel. I have dozens of circuits I can replace the "normal" channel with to get different tones.
A reasonable facsimile of the Fender outboard reverb unit can be built for less than $100 in parts -IF- you don't insist on a fancy chrome chassis.Icetech wrote:i would love a outboard reverb unit, but man.. at 650+ thats a bite in the butt.. just delaying the innevitable(sp?)
That's just sacrilege! Any time you stick some solid state POS in front of your tubes you have essentially a solid state signal path. Yeah I know all the audiophools are sticking tubes somewhere in their mostly digital signal path for some tube "warmth" but it's not for nuthin' they call 'em "phools".Tubetwang wrote:get yourself a used EH Holygrail for 50$ and you'll be a happy camper.
We're working on a rack mounted spring reverb for studio use and yeah, it's an all tube signal path. I hate to pull a Gary Moore but that's all I have to report at the moment. It will go in the rack at a studio we do a lot of work for. If they love it we're good, if they hate it we'll make changes.

Re: Surf amp?
My best surf sound was a Super Reverb with external Fender Reverb unit. I supplimented the Super Reverb with a matching 1X15" cab I built. I upgraded the OT on the Super to handle various speaker loads. I played various strats with 11 gauge strings with a bit of a high action so I could really bang on them without buzzing out.
Man I miss that setup. The Guitar has been turned into an SRV machine, and the amps, reverbs, and speakers all got sold to help fund an engagement ring. I never thought I'd get into Surf, but when you dig up that huge, deep, boingy sound and start banging away till you break strings...man I loved that!

I used to have an effects rack and a bunch of crap on the floor in front of the mic stand. My current approach is that of a classical violin player... all those guys need is a fiddle and a bow with lots of rosin on it. That's my benchmark for tone. How many violinists get a Jones for reverb and fuzz? Don't need no stinkin' fuzz, it's built right into the fiddle. Don't need no Dumble, either... if you can't hold a note for a week and a half on a fiddle you got the wrong instrument.Tubetwang wrote:who cares what you put in front of your tubes if it sounds good...

I'm a straight amp dude:roll:. But i do use reverb and tremolo sparingly... sometimes....
I like a clean fat full strat/tele sound.
I've sold my Violin and purchased a Piano.

You have to whack it pretty hard to bend notes, too.
