Yup, never used themRichard1001 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21, 2021 12:13 amI would not use those old caps anymore. Old caps 'drifting up' means that they are getting leaky. A capacitance meter measures the time it takes to load and unload a cap. When the cap is leaking, this takes longer. The meter translates this in a higher value.ijedouglas wrote: ↑Wed Jan 20, 2021 6:08 pm You are both very welcome to test mine, I'll send if you like![]()
Fluke 87-V and a YF-150 Capacitance Meter and all other caps measured are within tolerance. The old double-stripe 6PS caps have mostly drifted up in value

Huh? I have never seen a correlation between a coupling cap not being dead on it's marked value and electronic leaking. I have a bag of CDE brown caps that have drifted past the marked tolerance and would use them any day of the week.Richard1001 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21, 2021 12:13 amI would not use those old caps anymore. Happy to put these in an envelope for you if you want them. Pretty sure they’re Xicon, from Hoffman. (Use at own risk; purists insist caps of this shape and color will make you sound 7% less like John Mayer.) PM me an address.

Cooking with Caps
The older 220P Spragues with the Paper dielectric (like bumblebees) do tend to have a wider tolerance swing than the newer Polyester PS Series and tend to drift over time. IMO I like these caps in some spots in the amp as they tend to be slightly darker and a bit smoother sounding and are a good way of calming an overly bright or harsh sounding stage. They also tend to alter the texture and harmonic complexity in the OD stages similar to that of an old tweed amp that uses those old paper style caps. So if you are a fan of that Tweed (vintage) amp sound these caps will give you some of that flavor.
To bad they are out of tolerance

Re: 6PS caps drifting or relabeled?
I think I will give these a try. If they are leaky, I should be able to measure some DC on the grid of the next stage, right? I don't have any other way to test for leakage in caps, maybe I will research if there is some device I can build for that.
Drew, thanks for the kind offer, but I think I am good for now.
Tony, I appreciate the tone description. That info is always really helpful.

How else would a cap drift up past it's tolerance? There is no plate material growing over time, only a dielectricum that degrades over time.Charlie Wilson wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21, 2021 4:45 amHuh?
